MC275 Question

Greetings,

MC275 question: what's the difference between MC275 II, III, and IV.
In particular does II and III use use point to point wiring?
Did anyone see insides of MC275 IV? What's the quality of PCB?
How does II compare to IV? ( I have a choice of either brand new, but the dealer would not unpack to audition).

Thanks for your help

All MC275s use boards including the original. Point to point wiring is an old wives tale or for those who build in very small quantities.
The MKIV has one large board which eliminates lots of internal wiring (noise antennas) between tube sockets and boards which makes the amp quieter.
The MKIV is the most powerfull version at over 90 watts per channel and has the best signal to noise ratio. This is my favorite if you want modern performance and the ability to drive big speakers.

Thanks Ron...
Power is not the first thing on the shopping list.
Since none uses ptp I will probably go with MKII as I could get it for 2500 brand new vs 3500 for MKIV.
Is MC275 a good choice for straight CD/Amp interface?
It'll be Rotel CD player, Triumph speakers, and a volume control.

Thanks again

The MkII and later have gain controls. They are bypassed on the MKIV when in balanced mode. You won't lose on one for $2500 but the MKIV is the one with authority the others will give you a taste of.

The gain controls are also bypassed in balanced mode, on my Mc275CE = MkII,
and on the mkIII = Stainless Steel also, I guess

AudioClassics has forgotten to add the MkIV on this site : www.mc275.com :sigh:

Emile, correct on the balanced ins. The frequency response on the various models is similar but the MKIV extends out farther at full power to around 60KHz due to the slightly larger modern output autoformers.

I don't know about the difference. I had an all-Levinson/Martin-Logan system (nsgarch on AgoN) and just installed a new MC275 MkIV to replace the Levinson 23.5 (a great amp BTW) but the 275 still beats the SS for sheer "listenability." ......and the output is plenty!

The only thing that pisses me off is the old-fashioned barrier strips -- it's 2007 for God's sake!

you should of held out a bit longer and waited for the 275v. the barrier strip is now gone on the new model.

Yeah, I just found that out, but OTOH, I paid $2700 (shipped) for a brand new MkIV. So I dealt with it -- see attached pictures:
