Mint condition McIntosh gear inheritance, now what?

Hi all, a good friend of mine sent me here to ask for advice. My aunt has asked me to help her value an excellent cache of vinate McIntosh, Marantz, and some Pioneer audio equipment, all in about as good of condition any I would wager, having known her husband.

I started talking to a company out of Denver but feel I'm getting the runaround, which is cool. Any advice on where to look to find the best price would be much appreciated.

Become a paid member and sell on the marketplace on this site or list locally on facebook marketplace. Go a little under market value since the gear is all long ago paid for and it will all sell quickly and you will make your aunt's day and also the buyers day.
If you are not using it, set it free.

Click on the subscribe button in the upper right corner of the home page. Cost is $25 per year, and gets you access to Barter Town, a forum where members buy, sell and trade with each other.

First, however, I'd look up Ebay sold prices for each item. Ebay prices are almost always higher than what you could get/sell something for in your local market. Therefore, you would want to discount from those prices. How much depends on how much in demand the item is, and how quickly you want to sell.

Do you have any way to test the equipment? Individual buyers generally want to know if it's in good working condition, or not. Makes a big difference in the price.

Where are you located? If a large populated area, you might have good luck selling locally. If not, you might be better off to sell to a reseller.

I may have done business with the company you referred to. If so, he's a nice guy, but is in business to make money. Another one in Colorado is The Music Room, out of Erie, CO.

Good luck.

Thanks for the info friend! Will take it all consideration.

Your best bet would be to sell them individually, obviously any business that buys them is trying to make money off of them. Being in a hurry won’t play to their advantage for sure.

OK, you said a "good friend" sent you here, but the gear is owned by your Aunt, correct?

I gather you have no interest in retaining this gear.

All is unknowns, so all wild cards we're speaking of until some more is known? I don't think any forum rules here would be broken to speak of equipment involved, current average values with any piece of equipment.

Or at least provide a list, then others I feel can comment pretty much unhindered as their worth-value, and what might be some other options you can explore. There are many.

Just as a stupid example, no, a Marantz 2220 isn't worth $2,000. Same I feel with an MC-2505, no matter how cherry.

You're not the first to be in the hands of what is an Estate find.

Calling a business, or someone acting as a consignment-middle man, well, you'll likely lose your pants.

Use the following and replace the item with the component you are looking up. It is a snapshot of the market, current and expired/sold.

Pioneer PL530 site:hifishark.com

Pay No Attention to <THAT> guy. He's just looking for some cheap McIntosh gear. ;)

It is highly recommended that you take your time, gather info on the gear such as price and condition, then sell it on through established online outlets.

FB Marketplace is not one I'd recommend but local Craigslist, eBay, Audiogon, etc... can be good options. TMR Audio will buy gear or work with you on a trade. Don't overlook your local McIntosh dealer.

And of course, you can sell it here by becoming a Subscriber with access to Barter Town.

But do your homework first. There is a section here called "Dollars and Sense" where you could post a new thread with a list of the gear you have on hand. You can ask for input on what folks think the gear is worth. Pictures help a LOT. I know there are quite a few members here who might have an interest in what you have.

Good luck.

Failing my offer, another option might be to find a local audio store who would sell it on consignment (where they get a percentage of the total). Assuming you are in no rush, you'd probably net a lot more out of consignment than if a company buys the lot of equipment outright. My own experience with selling high-end equipment to a company that buys audio is that they offer about 1/3rd of what they sell it for (I've declined).

If you give your location, you might be able to find a local AKer that could help you evaluate the equipment. You could also post photos of the gear on this forum and solicit opinions on value.

I would put an ad in the local newspaper. Big Hi-Fi Sale! Saturday 9am-3pm. Take out a loan if you need to, and be prepared to spend $$$$$!!

Maybe an ad on Craigslist with one grainy photo and a full ashtray in view..

Facebook MP you’ll want at least 3 pictures with none of them being from a good angle, and no description except, “make offer”.

Check sold ebay listings, and I repeat SOLD listings, not what folks would like to get. Read the descriptions as well to get an idea of the condition of the units and where your gear would fit in there. For a local sale, figure on a reasonable reduction from eBay prices, just depends on the unit. If super desirable, the discount is less, if solid stuff, more so.

If you put a list up you can get a better idea from the forum as well.

@G - Vibes - Welcome to AK!

If you are talking to the stereo dealer in Denver on South Broadway, approach with caution. I know a few folks have taken gear there and walked away with just a fraction of it's worth. If you are dealing with a company in North Denver (not TMR) and if it is who I think it may be, yes, a run around is highly possible.

+1 on Barter town

While I can appreciate some of the humorous(?) offers made, and the SUBSCRIBE to sell here mentions, the OP needs valuations before listing anything, or even before making an agreement with a coinsignment shop.
Posting Manufacturer and model numbers would allow AK'ers to offer suggestions as to value. And checking these manuf. models at SOLD ebay and hifishark among other places would also offer some insight into the current market.
JMO my free opinion. And worth(?) every penny.
