MM vs MC in my setup

Hi all. I am using a Technics SL-1500 with a Stanton EL 680 cartridge, playing through a Marantz 2230. Is this cartridge MM or MC (I briefly poked around and couldn't find an answer, sorry if this is an easy question) and does my Marantz play well with it? There's no MM/MC selector on it.

As Andre Garcia said, is Moving Iron (MI), the functional equivalent of Moving Magnet(MM). And as your Marantz is not capable of taking a Moving Coil (MC) cartridge without an additional step up device you are spared the need to decide.
Your particular Marantz, like the vast majority (yes there are exceptions) of '70's products, never gave thought to MC cartridges.
Many would be happy to use your Stanton cartridge, with a good stylus- that's a whole 'nother discussion for which others should be able to offer suggestions.
To fill out what your system entails, what loudspeakers are you currently using?

Try a better preamp than inbuilt phonostage of your Marrantz. You will be very happy.

Regards
Sachin

There are still some high quality high output moving coil cartridges available. They can be used with a MM input. The current geneeation ones have resolved the limitations of previous designs.

75% of the time I am using Klipsch RB-5s. The other 25% is B&W DM302.

I was under the impression the 2230 had a decent phono preamp but I am pretty ignorant on the topic. How much would I have to spend to get a significant upgrade?

It really depends on your budget. IMHO most receivers didn't get the best phono stages, so buying an external one, a nice one, will upgrade the performance. If your happy with the sound, be happy and move on ;)

So was I until a few weeks ago when I bought a used Schiit Mani for my work system. When it arrived, I plugged it into my 2250B to make sure it worked OK. It sounded so much better that I haven’t wanted to take it out. The noise floor is a little higher than the built-in, but it sounds better overall. I’m now on the hunt for a more permanent pre for this system.

Check out the Emotiva, it sounds great in my system. If you would like a listen, let me know.

Thank you Mister Pig in pointing out that I was remiss in suggesting that there are a handful of high output MC's such as the Denon DL-110 and the Hana offerings.

And a couple from Ortofon, a Sumiko BPS EVO III, and Dynavector 10x5. Not sure if there are any others.

Cheers

Thanks for the input and suggestions. Honestly for now I'm happy with the sound and I'm not super into vinyl. If either of those things changes I'll look into upgrades. Just wanted to make sure what I have is ok from a technical perspective.
