Need advice -- apparent bad cart

Hi all,

One of the linear trackers I picked up over the summer came with a Stanton L747S with the original D74S stereohedron stylus. It had a lot of sibilance and distortion on "S" sounds, which I assumed was caused by a worn stylus.

So, today the UPS man delivered a $100 LP Tunes Shibata replacement stylus. I installed it, cued up Bruce Hornsby's Scenes from the Southside (one of my favorite LPs), and the distortion is still there, and probably worse than with the original stylus.

So I assume I have a bad cart. Should I go for an RMA from LP Tunes, or try to find another cart that will work with this stylus? Will any modern Stantons work with it?

This sucks!!:no::no:

It may not be the cartridge of stylus? It may be a tracking error? Is there any way to test the cartridge and new stylus on another turn table?

Yea, I have two linear trackers and the cart sounds bad on both, with both new and old styli. From what I've read, MM cartridges generally don't go bad, given they have no moving parts, so I'm at a loss as to why this Stanton has a problem.

LP Tunes has a 30% restocking fee so $30 may be the price of this.

If not a cartridge/turntable setup issue it could also be damage to the LP from previous mistracking too. If I recall correctly your stylus will work on a Stanton 680 or 681 body, you may be able to pick one up cheap used.

Thanks Chairspud and Larry! I'll look for a cart -- which one would you recommend from the list?

It's not the LP - it plays very nicely on my other tables.

That's quite a list Larry!

Aero, the 680/681 are all essentially the same cartridge but of the two the 680 can often be found cheaper used.

It could also be a bad new stylus. I experienced that with an aftermarket replacement stylus for my Stanton 681. Every 's' on the new cart was 'shhhhh' no matter how much time I spent trying to align it.

The only P-mount KABUSA has in a Stanton is the 721EE and it has the Universal mount adapter. <$40.

Well I tend to jump to conclusions at times, and this is one of those times. That Shibata must have dug out the worst part of my worn Bruce Hornsby album. I'm now playing INXS Kick, one of my better LPs, and the sound is breathtaking. Phew!

Oh, so it's yet another "this stylus falls into a different part of the groove" story... has anyone started writing down which of their LP's should be played with which stylus?

As you get into this there's a whole lot to learn...don't know what I'd do without the folks here.

KAB is missing the Pickering TL series of p-mount cartridges from this list; I have swapped my D74S stylus onto them with good results. The Pickering stylii will start with "DTL" and there's a variety of model numbers, most starting with "TL".
