New facebook scam asking for verification code, what's the catch?

Super Member
Today I noticed a new Facebook scam that asking the seller's phone number and then sending a verification code. (at least this is new to me).

So what's catch? Simply to fishing your phone number?

The story is: The buyer respond to my post within seconds of posting. A classic computer script behavior.

The buyer ask if it is available and I answer "No". Though it is done. But it is not.

The buyer ignore my answer and just says "I want to buy it,Ok,please give me your cell phone number?I have sent you a quick verification code from Facebook, if your post is real send me the code, You know most of the post is fake"

Well. This is new.

So I give them the FTC Fraud Report line phone.

And they said they sent the code and ask me for verification.

I give them a made-up and thought they will accept it. It does not !

The buyer said the number is wrong and resend the code.

It gets interesting from here. The buyer's message seems randomly pick from the following:

"check your 22000 phone text message and send me the 6 digit code"

"I resend the code"

"ok"

"are you there"

"you got my code ?"

"22000 text massage screenshot send me"

If they dont loop, it really looks like a real person. Unfortunately, the response does not match my input perfectly.

After about 4 or 5 loops. The only response I can get is the Thumb up emoji.

I guess the AI has done here. But clearly scam AI gets smarter than before.

I won't give my phone # to Google or FB or any other site. I'm always amazed that people list their phone # on FB.

Why not? Your phone number is nothing more than a series of 7 or 10 numbers. You can pick up any phone, dial any 7 numbers, and probably get someone. Same with an SSN or bank account number.

They are trying to access/steal your Google account in hopes that you have financial info or credit cards stored. That’s what the code is. They have entered your phone number into Google and have clicked send code to reset password. You give them that code and they now own your Google account.

The catch is Facebook.

This scam has been going on for a few years on Craigslist. This is the first I’ve heard of it on Facebook. Mainly because most folks don’t provide their phone number on a FB marketplace listing. Facebook has plenty of problems, but this particular scam isn’t really one of them.

I get a message that Google needs my phone number to "comply with the law".

Not my problem.

Go away.

Yes, they are just making the brut type of hacking your FB account is not the best method, and require to pass the second step, so FB accounts with the double account verification option are safe until you send the verification code to the hackers, of course, also double-check the phone number that is connected with your FB account, sometimes hacker uses the free temporary phone number service to change your regular phone number and pass the double authentification account feature.

It is amazing. You don't even use your real name. People put their name, even their picture out there.

And a poster comes on here with one fuggin post and digs this up.

There is definitely something wrong here. Some strange person asks for your phone number even after you say the product is out of stock. They are definitely trying to do something wrong with your phone number. Maybe even trying to steal your Google account, as mentioned above. Just don't give them any codes, and that's it. In general, you need to be careful with social networks. You can not share your personal data with anyone. My friend blogged on Instagram. She invested a lot of money in his promotion, even buying subscribers to 1394TA. As a result, due to her stupidity, her account was hacked and stolen. Here is such a lesson.

They want your phone number so that they can send ads to your phone. That's what happened to me. I got ads for a gas station promotion.

Actually, this scam is way worse. By doing what they ask, you're giving them permission to clone your phone. When you do that, they now have access to your 2-step authentication texts, etc.

Facebook is now a free fire scam zone. The last two things I listed they wanted my verification code. I gave them a fake one and they got mad. He called me a ****ing scammer of all things. Lots of car ads have been scams for a while now.
