New to vacuum tubes

Hi there

I've just joined the world of tubes, and so have a lot to learn. The amp arrived with a faulty 6N9P/6SL7 tube, and I am in the process of replacing a matched pair. The faulty tube has four pins, but I notice from online catalogues that replacements generally have eight. Can I replace the tube with an eight pin variant?

Yep, as long as it's a 6SL7 you'll be fine. Welcome to AK:thmbsp:

Hey, now that I think about it, the 6SL7 is a true double triode, which means it uses all eight pins. Did the faulty one get some pins broken off? If so, make sure to check the socket for any remains.

Jay is right, the 6H9C requires 8 pins. 6 for each of the two triode sections, and two for the heater equals 8. I think you need to find the other missing ones. tubes you can use are VT-229, 6SL7, 6SU7( matching sections 6SL7 ), 6188, 5691...:) These are all 8BD-based, mu=70 twin triodes.
cheers,
Douglas
