PE 2040 Repair

This may be a dumb question, but I am trying to get my Perpetuum Ebner PE 2040 in great working condition and I can't really even seem to figure out how to take it apart. I took the spindle off and tried to remove the platter and it won't come off. There doesn't appear to be a mechanism that I can undo in the spindle area. Is this a stupidly obvious thing?

It doesn't have a C clip. And, from looking at others of the same model, it doesn't appear that it's supposed to.

I have a PE 2020 and if it's the same platter setup, there's nothing to do but pull. I would grip the edges with my fingers while wiggling it back and forth and pulling straight up.

Now, which screws will remove the entire plinth? The manual and other online forums seem to show all but the simplest things.

Again, going by my 2020, the chassis isn't attached to the plinth per se. There should be two flat metal transport pieces that you can see when you remove the platter. They are each held in position by a screw. Loosen the screws and slide them in toward the center. Then you can lift the chassis up and out, though you'll need something to sit it on. In a pinch I'd use two stacks of books at the same height and far enough apart to accommodate the motor and other mechanicals in between.

The manual tonearm lifter won't raise the tonearm high enough to reach the platter/record. What do I need to do to adjust the height? I'm only asking because this is not covered in the manual I have because it's for the 2020, which doesn't have the cuing lever.

I have a PE 3060 that was not working and Klaus over on the Vinylengine (Dual forum) was able to help me get it going. I highly recommend him as a resource.

I took the turntable to get repaired and it has been working fine until recently. When I put down the cuing lever, the tonearm goes down way below the platter. This happened before the repair and it is now happening again. The person who repaired it cannot exactly remember what was done to make it work, but he has said things about a piece that had gotten deformed in storage and making a makeshift fix. He also said something about giving a slight bend to a metal piece in the actuator to make manual cuing work well. Does anyone have any input/ideas?

That little [four-letter-expletive] of a turntable is the most impossible thing to get into. Has more levers and springs and levers and springs [and tenny-weeny tonearm balls] than you can imagine, most of which would need to be removed for a repair. It has two wear items that involve arm lift and arm movement. And to get to these parts, well, that is another story. I worked on two, and have turned down all other requests for repairing these monsters Make-shift repair do not last, as you are now well aware of.

Best of luck.
A member here, Dave [I can give you his contact info], has someone who fixed one of his P.E.s. He would certainly share this with you if asked.

David. I hope you and the family are doing well.

And I did have a bit more hair before I met your P.E. turntable.

Newbie here, and I recently purchased a PE2020 Turntable to replace the one I bought new is 1969 and stupidly sold about 20 years later. Was described as needing work and was further damaged in shipping to me. I've gotten some replacement parts to deal with the obvious problems, (like the broken tone arm), can anyone suggest someone who can repair/restore this for me?

Many thanks
Chris

I just bought one if these tables in very clean physical condition but unserviced. Wowza, what a cluster of gears and springs and arms and clips and cams. I thought Duals were a pain in the butt. I paid 30 for it and it came with two nice cartridges so I am right side up, but I am not sure I will get this thing running right....I have the 2020 service manual and for the life of me I cannot see the point of the "shut off lever" nothing seems to trigger it? Maybe someone else has been in here and put it back together wrong? Pictures in manual look like its right.

do you have a manul specifically for the 2040? I would love a copy if you do. The one I have is the 2020 and its similar.

The service manual for the PE 2020 is also used for the 2040--there was never a separate SM for the 2040. I must have had a brain far when I said in that earlier post that I had a copy of the "2040" service manual.

It's been a while since I worked on my 2020, but if you post a few photos of the shut-off lever on your 2040, I'll see if I can help. That said, if you haven't already cleaned out the old grease and replaced with new, I'd start there before trying any mechanical fixes.
