Pioneer PL-560 Distortion

I really like my Pioneer PL-560, very sturdy turntable. Unfortunately, I am getting noticeable distortion on this unit.

It has a pretty cheesy output cord with uninspiring RCA connectors on one end, solid wired on the other end. I don't know if the cord is the culprit.

In the meantime, I am using an old backup Technics turntable. I really don't care for it, it has some issues too, but the distortion is gone. And it has a robust cord, with connectors on both ends (on the turntable and to the receiver).

Wondering if there are some common issues to look at? I am mechanically inclined, not so much on hifi equipment,

I have already installed a new cartridge on the Pioneer, same problem as before.

Cartridge alignment or anti skate problem. Is this the older version of the PL-560 as in the attached pic.657323-ae9e7e92-pioneer_pl_560.jpg

Check the tonearm bearings. Remove stylus, adjust the counterweight till the arm floats in balance, then tap headshell very lightly. It should swing down, then up and then back down into its original/floating position. Tap left/right to check horizontal movement also. It should feel very light and free. If not then its binding or bearings need lube. That could cause vtf issues while playing and consequently distortion.
