Every year here in my town, there is the largest 4th of July fireworks display West of the Mississippi since 1964. The annual budget is usually $450,000.00 and that's alot of fireworks. This year for the first time in 45 years, there was no fireworks display. The local residents that would normally attend the fireworks extravaganza must have bought fireworks together with the 100,000 people that normally come into town for the display last night. Because it sounded like world war 3 for 8 hours or so and it never let up once. The sky was more lit up than during a thunderstorm, and I had to close my windows because I was gagging on the smoke filled air. Every time I looked out of my upstairs window near my desk, it was a free fireworks display. There have been pledges by local businesses like Burlington Northern Railroad for next year's display but I will not attend. They are supposed to be shooting smaller mortars and I like the big ones. When I was a child they shot off the 36 inch in diameter "Harvest Moon" mortars and lots of them. I come from a family that used to make fireworks. Maybe I'll get my license and make fireworks for a living? I always did like making the fountains and pinwheels for the kids at school and it helpd pay for my audio addiction. If you hear a loud bang and then don't see me here any longer, you'll know what happened. psssssssssssssssssssss................ POP

I would love to see the 48" go off. That's got to be spectacular!

Can you fricken imagine what that 48 incher sounds like going off ??:sigh:

It would be like the old stereo magazine ads where the guys hair is flying back. I have found that most people who like music, enjoy fireworks. I wonder why that is?:thmbsp:

I skipped the fireworks on the 4th this year. I will wait for the ones on Byram Day (town day for the town I live in.) It is always the same week as my birthday and they have a fair and shoot off fireworks across the street from my house. And being a smallish park/town, you get to sit about 300ft from where they are shooting them off (they are on the other side of one of the baseball fields). Its awesome to lay on your back and look up at them coming down.

I really like that kind of thing too, it feels so down home to me. I used to lay in the park and listen to bluegrass bands too.

How the heck do they hurl that thing high enough in the air so as not to incinerate the surroundings when it goes off, without blowing it smithereens during the launch? Holy crapoli!

I'm sure it is something around 200 pounds of black powder in one of these tubes for a lift of 1,500 feet in the air as this probably detonates with a blast radius of 1,200 feet in diameter. The shell casing is very hard, multi-layered and probably between 4 to 6 inches thick.

I like the hardhat they are wearing. At least the top of their head will be left in case of an accident.:D

Actually, I was loading 15 inch cylinder shaped mortars into launch tubes on a crew once and I asked the pyrotechnician about the large bolts through the ends and the rocks in the concrete plugs in the ends of the cardboard tubes and he said not to worry, that they would be vaporized from the blast and would not constitute a hazard. I was stunned but got thinking about the extreme heat as well as the explosion. I imagine the helmets might leave an orange stain somewhere.

The largest I've seen for sure is 24", they fill the sky pretty good.

I've taken to going to the Pyrotechics Guild show when it's in one of the neighboring states. Pretty good shows with some interesting stuff happening.

Last one I went to was 2007 in North Dakota and may go to the 2009 show in Iowa.

The firecracker Superstring and Megastring might well have been the loudest things I've ever heard.
