Well...I don't think you're in a bad place...fwiw. You love (have loved) movies...true love never dies, as they say. I don't think I'll make recommendations vis a vis reviewers, but I will ask...what to date are your favorite 10 films (of your life)? You don't need to tell me why.

Cheers!

Ps. There is great music and great cinema being made...literally as we speak...
Yup, tons of great films out there. I was spoiled by the time I grew up in, now it just seems I have a hard time wading through the marketing, or a hard time finding the marketing!
Music is my work and I sometimes find myself trying to convey to folks, who aren't as interested as I am, that there is a massive wealth of good stuff just beyond the "fast food" music, if one cares to reach just a lil' further and find some trails to go down - heck even lots of the "fast food" music is great. Maybe that kinda speaks to what I was fumbling to get at, and maybe it's just common knowledge now to folks younger than me - one's gotta rely on ones' own nose. Getting off thread, OP was getting at it with a concise question, I'm derailing here.
Last I'll say, I lived in Ottawa for the first 2/3 of my life and there were a couple of "art house" cinemas that were just great, the Bytown and the Mayfair. I could just go to the theatre after a quick look at the local free rag and most of the time catch a flick that inspired, and the breadth of subject matter was endless. So, I had the fortune of not really needing in depth reviewers. I now live in small town USA and miss all that dearly.

Most of the time, I used to agree with Ebert, but there were limits, and once in a while, I couldn't understand his liking some awful movie. When I used to get Stereo Review back in high school, I knew if Steve Simels liked something, I would hate it. It was almost a 100% certainty I would feel the opposite of how he felt about it. I thought they had him do reviews of types of music he didn't like anyway, to "churn things up".

I don't know if it's because of age, but I've never really hated so many movies, in genres I've liked my entire life, as I have over the last 10 years or so. I've always hated hated hated musicals, strongly disliked romcoms, but recently I've hated a lot of action movies, sci-fi, and crime dramas. And the remakes of great movies of the past....so many are so bad, and pointless. If the special effects aren't a joke, it doesn't need remaking, period. And it for sure doesn't need remaking more than once. I work with a lot of much younger people than I am, and I am amazed over and over again at what some of them think is a good movie. A lot of them have no idea they are watching a vastly inferior remake (MHO), and then there are the movies they have no idea existed at all. Some of my fondest memories are of when I asked them if they had ever seen "Taxi Driver", "The Boys From Brazil", and even, "The Godfather"!!!. One kid asked me, "Why would I want to see a movie about a cab driver?". He had no idea what he was going to see the next night at work. When it got to the "You talkin' to me?" scene, he finally knew what his dad and uncles were imitating. A lot of them complained "Godfather" was too dark and moved too slow. I kind of felt bad for them, sort of.
