Sorry to hear of his passing. He sure could play that trumpet. Always loved his updated version of "Maria" on his "New Vintage" CD.

I had the great pleasure of seeing Maynard Ferguson and Buddy Rich on stage, together, in London, Ontario, in 1976. The stage could scarcely contain two such monumental egos.
But the music... I never heard anything like it, before or since.

R.I.P. Maynard, and thanks for the good ones like The Theme from Shaft, Birdland, and a couple others.
You got lucky Ernie, seeing those two on the same stage. I've heard the two bands referred to as cars. Maynard's band was like a big Cadillac going down the highway, and Buddy's band was a Maserati on the same stretch of road.

TA, it was December 1976, and the finale was Maynard and Buddy 'cutting heads'. Each one trying to outdo the other with solos. Usually cutting heads is between two musicians on similar instruments. This duel went on for over 40 minutes, neither one giving an inch, nor gaining one. When they finally stopped, both started laughing, and actually hugged each other, and stood on the stage side-by-side, for their bows. Even the band gave them a standing O, screaming and whistling.
What a night. I'll never forget it, though it was almost 30 years ago.

It's good to hear the conversations about Maynard's influence in the music world. Our local (Dallas, TX) talk radio station had a little tribute to him this morning. The News guy, who was obviously a HS Band guy, talked about Maynard's commitment to music education. He mentioned that many of his concerts in the 70's and 80's were in High Schools.
My first exposure to Maynard's music, was when I was about fourteen (1978). We had a young guy renting a room from us for the summer. He had a nice Pioneer set-up, with some Bose 901's. One night my Dad and he decided to have an audio shoot-out. The guy brought his gear down to the family room. My Dad had his Sylvania Quad system down there. They played all kinds of music that night, Maynard's was what I remember though.
It was a great night, which planted the audio seed in my heart.
