Sansui amp/tuner cover swaps?

Can anyone tell me if the metal top cover of a Sansui AU-717 amp will fit/replace the cover on an AU-919? Likewise would a TU-717 tuner top cover fit a TU-919?

I have an AU-919 with some serious surface rust on the sides of the top cover. Rather than strip and repaint it I would like to swap it with a good one from a donor amp. Finding an AU-919 donor is expen$ive but non-working AU-717 amps seem more plentiful and go for a lot le$$. I don't have an AU-717 or a drawing of one to compare the two so I thought I'd throw the question out to the crowd to see if anyone has tried it before with any success.

The top cover on my TU-919 tuner is in very good condition but has been repainted by a previous owner. If a TU-717 top cover will fit I'll keep my eyes peeled for one with a non-scarred original paint job and consider investing in it for a swap. No I'm not anal-retentive just obsessive compulsive! :D

Thanks for your help.

The AU-919 I had was deeper than my AU-719. Not sure about the AU-717.

I just checked the SM for the 717. 16 15/16" W X 6 5/8" H X 15 3/8" D.

The manual gives the depth of the AU-717 as 15 3/8 " which is shorter than the AU-919 which is 16 7/8" - this could be beacuse they're measured differently (I know that AU-919 measurement is from knob to knob not the case size) but I think the AU-717 is smaller.

Strip and respray would be a pretty easy job and you'd end up with a lovely new finish.

Rob & Neil,
Thanks for the dimensions. I'll check those against the AU-919 tonight at home but it seems like it might not be possible.

The previous owner of my TU-919 did a strip and repaint and it looks great it's just not original Sansui paint. It's one of those things about collecting to me that I want to keep it as close as possible to original condition.

I definitely will strip and paint the AU-919 cover before putting it back on any donor amp. It has some surface rust on both sides but not on top. My guess is that someone moved it with sweaty hands and then put it in a cabinet or closet for many years without wiping it down first. It's a shame too as there are no other marks or scratches on it. It's not such a big deal I was just hoping the top cabinet from an AU-717 might be interchangeable since they are so plentiful. They are cheap enough to get one, swap the covers and then re-sell it without losing any significant money. Most AU-919 amps are too pricey to acquire just for a swap and re-sell. I'll keep looking for one anyway.

Thanks again for your replies.

The 919 is bigger then any of the other amps you mentions. The cover's won't swap. Same is true of the tuners. They are generally smaller than the companion amp. Besides a TU-919 sells for considerably more than the AU-919.

Yep I had both a 717 and 919 at the same time and the 919 is bigger. Time to break out some sand paper and paint. Also consider having the case power coated for a real nice look.

Thanks again guys for all the replys!

The tuner I am keeping but the amp is a spare that I won't use so I wanted to clean it up before it goes up for sale. I'll try to see what I can do to remove the rust without resorting to strip and re-paint.
