Snell Type C

I lucked into mine. Local, from original owner (via broker- he died), rare white oak finish, and they were still in business when I got them so a missing binding post nut was quickly replaced- for no charge.

Mine are 2.2’s but I wouldn’t hesitate to move up the food chain. These sound phenomenal.

I believe the C-IV did have a rear tweeter attenuator. But it was probably close to 30 years ago now I last saw/heard them...

snell c Xover.jpg Update on my type C's . I have the crossovers out and have replaced the e-caps on one crossover. I didn't notice that the crossovers are marked 14C and 13C and so are the drivers , with the exception of one woofer which is marked in black sharpie "orig C woofer kit" . Also a 4uf BP has been removed from this crossover and one of the bundles has been decreased by 4uf(BP). The woofer replacement is physically slightly different from the original. The work appears to be factory . The cap I'm pointing to is the one that was removed from the crossover with the replacement woofer, the bundle mentioned is in the lower center .

Recapping all done, speakers playing .The rear tweeter has a 3.3uf @50v and a 2uf @ 50v in series I replaced those with a 1.2uf @ 250v film cap . With the crossover recap I noticed an improvement in bass right away . The speaker's sound to me is big and open without being over bearing .The speakers placement is far from optimal. The recapped Kenwood KR 7600 appears to drive them with ease . A little more TLC on cabs is needed . I'm doing my CV's next.

I always wanted some Thiel's(used) but could never decide on what model and they would have had to be local .
Did you write up a schematic for your C's by any chance?
I have a pair of C's and am curious.
Also, I have a midrange in the left speaker that likes to go out here and there. No original drivers or recommended replacements from Atomic (which I will start another thread on).

Thanks,
Dan

Amazing how much of a rat's nest that that crossover is. My Snell Es and EIIIs looked similar but with fewer components. Kinda cool that these were pretty much all hand tuned by either Mr. Snell himself or by a trained technician with a reference. Nice pic.

I run a set of CS04a in my family room with a Billie hybrid amp and it's an ideal combo. Have had 2 or 3 sets of CS2 and CS1.2 at the shop and they all find loving homes pretty quickly. Next time you are available, come by the shop in Lawrence, MA.

Many moons ago, Had a pair of the Snell C1s and well as their the original Snell Type 1. Nice sounding speakers, but as others have noted, the lytic caps in the cross over are due for replacement. On the later models, Snell added a 0.1uf film mylar cap as a bypass to the lytic caps so you may want to consider that. Also owned the C5s, A-IIIs and B minors at one point. But almost any Snell speaker will sound better if you drive it with an amp that delivers plenty of current.

Inherited my father's Type C's-purchased them together at Stereo Lab on Ohio State campus. Can't find the manual so have really dumb question-to do simple two plug connection-no bypass-does it matter which posts use? Left or right set? The speakers are marked Left and Right for proper positioning but no other info.

Do you think the Snell crossovers were tweaked to compensate for the BP electrolytic caps poor sound ?

I had a pair of the C's many years ago. Back then Peter Snell would hand tweek the crossover on each pair to match a reference pair of speakers.
These were built long before the high quality film caps were commonly used in crossovers. Before you do anything you may want to label and identify all the parts to their locations so it you change out the parts and don't like the result, you can put the original parts back in their stock location.

does it matter which posts use?
The double set of connections is so you can separate the speaker to allow use of two amps. Since you are not doing that, there should be a jumper between similar connections (two reds connected, two blacks connected by jumpers) and you would use either set, one red, one black.

If you need more info, post a picture and we can help you out.

There are pics on the web of the connections showing jumpers of different types.

Oh, welcome to ak. Coulda been a new post, would have avoided mcgjohn’s response to the original poster’s question from 2020. But no problem, we get a lot of late answers to posts here.
