Anyone have experience with this player? It seems to get pretty good reviews for an older player.

I know they look pretty incredible with their copper clad chassis and all.

I was lucky enough to find a mint one on Craigslist, in Missouri no less, I contacted the seller anyway and surprisingly convinced him to ship it to me.

I'm totally stoked.

I have a couple myself. There's an AK member that detests their laser reliability, but I haven't had any issues with mine. If it's still working now, I imagine it should last you a while. There was a retro write-up article from a Brit magazine that espoused their high quality playback, but unfortunately I don't have the review files anymore. It's a very smooth sounding player, with excellence bass and openness. It's not exactly in-your-face, so keep that in mind. I think they're great in the right system. Enjoy!

I have one as well. It sounds really good.

The issue with the laser is that dual CD/SACD discs will stop being recognized as SACDs and the CD layer only will play. Mine has this issue 90% of the time.

But dedicated SACD's will still play for while - mine works fine. Eventually, I've read, the SACD recognition will stop working as well. Hopefully not for a long time. :D

You can check the # of hours on your individual unit via the menu - mine has a lot. But I got it for cheap off CL, so no big deal.

You can also try to do a laser calibration, which some say will help with SACD dual layer recognition. I tried this with mine and it didn't help. but some say it has for them.

The one in Columbia? I was looking at it, but I thought the price was a bit high for my comfort level on a local sale, judging by eBay listings. Looks like a great player, though - I'm sure you'll enjoy it!

Love my SACDs and I think they sound great. Not sure if it is the resolution or the DSD processing through the right player but they sound very fine. If they were not write protected they would have displaced CDs years ago.

I owned this for more 5 years ago, this is really good sound. But, it did not often read SACD as well as its desgin. Sometime it read, sometime it did not.

The smooth sound of classical, such as sonata, trio, quartet, ... even symphony but not in vocal.

Remember, chosing a right RCA cable can increase the sound stage, I had chosen the Acrolink instead of Purist.

In Vietnam, it's price about 200$.

Regards!

That's a calibration issue. My DVP-NS900V did the same thing when I got it. Multiple attempts at the calibration program with five or six different SACDs finally got it sorted out.

Yes Sam.

I talked to the guy at length, he said he was single his whole life up until last year. He got married and the new wife just wanted to be able to pick up one remote and turn everything on.

So according to him, out went his mono blocks and other assorted gear. Kinda sad. He's throwing in some nice cables though as well.

All in all a really nice guy, British expatriate too.

Look what came in the mail today....whoop whoop!

It sounds excellent. The internal dac sounds just as good as the one in my Denon. Before with my old player, if I switched from the digital out to analog, there was a noticeable degradation in sound. With this player I can't tell the difference.

Build quality is outstanding. The thing is a beast of player at about 25lbs.

Anyway here's some eye candy.

The previous owner even threw in all these cables for biamping.

Yeah I have one and it is modwright modified with tube out. Where can I get a manual for this Sony player. Also how do you calibrate the SACD. Can you calibrate the out put? I have one channel that's louder than the other and I'm tired of having to adjust the balance on my pre amp. Can a tech do this?

I've got one, too! Bought it off the auction site a few years ago for $75. Seller tried to test it, but didn't know what he was doing and couldn't verify if it worked or not, so sold it for parts/repair.

When I received it ti was in really bad shape. Dirt caked all over it, but surprisingly it worked! Inside was very clean, as well. I was able to get the front panel looking as good as new, but the top is beat up pretty bad.

Anyways, while it worked great for DVDs, CDs, and single layer SACDs, it wouldn't recognize the SACD layer on hybrids disks and wouldn't play CDRs. I thought I'd eventually buy a new laser, but then I found information about it's auto calibration via the service menu. I performed that with several CDs, DVDs, SACDs, and then it magically started working for all media types!

I made some slight modifications once I got it working: I stole the output signal after the summing opamp through 1uf PIO capacitors to gold-plated RCAs that I installed. I will eventually replace this mod with a tube output stage, as a previous poster has done. But, for now, it sounds fantastic!

Cosmetically, this summer I will refinish the metal top.

Oh, you can get the service manual here: http://www.hifiengine.com/manual_library/sony/dvp-s9000es.shtml

Rgbeach, are you saying your unit plays cdr's now? I own one of these and have been very happy with except for no CD-R and a slow load time.

Sorry for the bad information...I meant to say DVDR. The player doesn't recognize CD-R, but after calibration I was able to play DVDR discs.
