Sony TC 880 2

Any 880 owners out there!
I am looking for a toggle switch for my 880 2, only the plastic part is missing. I realise that a generic toggle might do but i want to preserve the originality if i can. Perhaps someone can recognise it from another device etc. I can post a photo if required.

I've not had the pleasure of seeing a TC-880-2 in the flesh, but I think my EL-7 has similar looking toggle switches and probably a number of other Sony products of that era too.

Your best bet will be to look for a cassette deck from that time period they have the same switches and buttons as your tc-880.

Exactly. I think that Sony did have a couple of cassette decks from the same era which used the same switches. I don't recall the model numbers off the top of my head though. But I probably have a brochure or two with these listed at home.

FWIW: I am a TC-880-2 owner, and it ranks as my all-time favorite machine.

Thank you all for the tips, i will look at some of the old cassette decks!

Goldear, i bought the Sony because of its reputation, whoever has one always confirms its greatness. I am a collector and have a few great decks but its difficult to pick a favorite as mostly they each have a unique feature that makes them interesting!

I took a look at my 880 and my elcaset machines last night. The 880 uses the same switches as both the EL5 and EL7. I did not notice any cassette decks with the same paddle switches.

Sacrificing and EL7 for the 880 would be a crime IMO. But an EL5 could probably be justified.

Goldear, i also searched the web and looked at every sony cassette deck and found nothing, i will look for a broken EL5!
Thanks for your help.

Maybe a Sony TC-K7 cassette deck? I know it has the same front panel config as the Elcasets. Mine's in storage, so I can't give you a pic right now.

I have a TC-K7II. And it is very similar in look to Sonys Elcaset machines. But is is more similar to the TC-765/6 than it is to the TC-880-2. Mine does not have the same big black paddle-switches as the TC-880-2 does, and that is the part that he needs.

As Koltrast mentioned the series matching
amps and pre,s ie TAE 8450 @ TAN,s use the black toggle switch also.

Those are probably pretty rare units. Its also possible that some of those might even be V-Fets. Whatever the case, I know that matching amplifiers were the only other units ever made which have the same light-galvanometer meters that the 880 has.

The PPM type meter was short lived in the consumer market with Sony's
pre amp TAE-8450, TAN Vfet and the RtR.

For those that have not had a chance to see these meters in person they
are IMHO very cool with their various function modes and their organic sense
of movement.
Now back to the RtR discussion.

I'd sacrifice an EL-5 for the 880. Those V-Fed units, and other PPM meters units are simply too rare and cool to sacrifice IMO.

Just for information purposes the cassette deck with the toggle switches is the TC209SD. I just purchased a broken one on eBay.

Good to know. That's definitely worth sacrificing for an 880.

Another question for you Goldear, whilst servicing my deck i have noticed a tape guide post missing from between the left pinch roller and the erase head, photo attached, you can just see a hole. I assume its supposed to be there??

I've owned 2 different 880s. Both lacked this guide. So I assume that this must have been a design change which was made early-on.

Goldear, another question!
I have been trying to set the bias and eq for Nab as the machine seemed to be set up more in line with IEC equalisation. My MRL calbration tape showed a marked droop in the high end for NAB but was more or less spot on for IEC. I have found that there is not quite enough play eq to get the response flat for NAB. I assumed this deck to be NAB, is it possible that it could be IEC bearing in mind that it is a European model???
