SpeakerLab Find?

Yesterday I was cruising the thrifts and came across a pair of very large custom-built looking cabinets... feeling through the grill cloth I could make out a 15" woofer, midrange, a rectangular horn cutout, and (through a tear) i could see a phillips tweeter.

No markings at all, but the two crossover controls were of good quality, and the cabinet damn heavy, so I figured I couldn't loose for $24.

So, paid the price, stuffed them in my Camry, got them home, opened them up and (sorry no Altec, Tannoy or JBL :tears:) and no horn (just an emply cutout) but at least decent quality drivers...

Now the mystery. All three drivers have a 'SpeakerLab' label on them. That said, I don't think any the drivers were made by speakerlab. The midrange for example is a Pioneer sealed back F-68 (from memory) same as found in the Pioneer CS-77. I don't see a manf code on the woofer (I fear it may be under the speakerlab label) so I'm not sure where it came from, but it may also be pioneer. The tweeter is just the run of the mill Phillips some with the caramel-colored face, but still the speakerlab label..

So, what role did Speakerlab play in these speakers? Where they built by Speakerlab or where the parts just sourced from there? Frankly, the construction suggests a garage job, but who knows. The 3-way crossovers are nice build quality, big copper inductors, good quality caps and pots.

I'm curious as to what AKers might know about SpeakerLab. Did they sell DIY kits? :scratch2:

The driver complement sounds sort of like a pair of Speakerlab 4's, though a 12" woofer would have been correct for these. If this is the case the tweeter would have been an EV horn. They did sell kits, as well as components and plans, so a home build is not out of the question. I am not aware of them sourcing parts from Pioneer, though I could be wrong. The sealed can mids were, I thought, sourced from Audax or Poydax. They got tweeters from all over the place - EV, Audax, Foster... Also, for a number of years, they manufactured their own woofers.

I'm sure others will be along shortly with more info.
