Currently have a Superscope r1220 receiver, which is functioning well and I like it. Have now also seen a Superscope r350 on a local auction. Would this be an upgrade or a downgrade?

The 350 is older and has more power. If the 350 is in good shape them more powere is rarely a bad thing and most of the time better.

Theoretically it would be an upgrade, but IMO not a significant one. 20 watts will only give you a 3dB increase in output level over 10 watts, all else being equal. Also, since this is an older receiver, you have no guarantee what condition the electronics will be in, and you already stated yours is working well.

Is there a particular reason you're looking at old Superscopes rather than something more contemporary?

I am drawn to the vintage stuff, for whatever reason. I like that Superscope has ties to Marantz without costing me a fortune. I get a kick out of seeing the word Marantz on the back :) the retro look of the units is awesome, nice warm wood and glowing lights. Side note - we never play the music loud as our kid is generally asleep upstairs so power not of tremendous concern.

Before you begin upgrading, you should consider what you're trying to accomplish. What does your current system lack that you think you can improve by replacing the receiver?

But the extra power give one a HUGE increase of the number of different speakers that can be used. Hook up a 10 wpc unit to 87db speakers and then hook up a 20 wpc unit and hear the difference.

I had the R350 , and it has a transformer fuse in the windings . i had to remove the transformer
remove the paper glued to the trans, jumper around the fuse and put it all back .

next issue , the TO220 output devices had plastic ? insulators instead of mica causing them to overheat.

Proceed with caution.....

I have a black face R1220, fun little amp when matched with efficient speakers. When I got it most of the bulbs were bad so I replaced with LEDs. The blue dial against the black face looks really cool. Be careful if you try this the plastic bar they are mounted on has an opening for the screws that hold it down on each end. These ends are very fragile, one end on mine was already broken. I had to glue a stiff plastic piece on each side then cut out for the screw after it dried, worked out pretty well.

Used to sell Marantz and Superscope gear as their distribution arm in Hawaii. I would go for Marantz branded gear in the 2xxx line. The Superscope stuff was lower end of the company's offerings. If you don't need lots of power a Marantz 2235 or 2252 or 2270 are good units, numerois others.
