Technics SA 300 worth saving?

This thing has led a hard life
The case is pretty bad but probably savable
The first thing I noticed was the tuner didnt work and when I opened it up the nylon wheel the string turns is supposed to be attached to a gear the turns the actual tuner and the gear has come out so turning the knob does not move the tuner
Also when hooked up to an outside source no sound comes out through aux or tape The power is going to the bulbs
The actual power modules appear to have been replaced but maybe not there is just a lot of extra goo that goes between the module and the heat sink around it
Overall pretty rough shape and I have very little in it
Tuner issue, no sound rough shape
Its not a Marantz 2325 or similar
I am thinking just part it out and help another one live
What does AK think?

It's simply not practical to save/rescue/refurbish everything, I finally have learned that after accumulating a basement full of old gear.

If it were in good shape and only needed a little work, it'd be a nice little unit. but in reality it's not worth a lot (even in great shape). Therefore it might be more valuable as a parts unit.

goooooo

That goo might be leaky cap poo-poo. They go Poo-Poo whenever they want.
Check for leaky caps.
If that is the only problem the tuner string is a day in the park.
The unit is probably worth it.

Not a cap its the power module thingy
I checked again and that white stuff you put behind it to dissapate heat is very new So I am guessing they are new
Its not just a string its a gear that turns the tuner gangs

If you can get it going for not much money, fine. The knobs and other bits could be worth more than the unit itself.
Did you check the fuses?

Fuse is fine
Based on how much of that white stuff was used the power modules were replaced by a novice so who knows what else is going on
if the two power modules test ok they are worth more than the whole thing and I think they are the same ones pioneer used- STK 0039
Knobs and face plate are actually pretty good

I got one channel to make noise normally very low volume and no bass but when I turn on the loudness that channel comes alive to almost normal
I have gotten nothing from the other channel ever and another curious thing is that when you turn the power switch off it keeps going and kind of fizzles out
Clearly teh switches are dirty but I have 1 can of deox and I really dont want to waste it
Anything

It has a lot similar features and looks like the realistic STA-2300 I've owned since new.

List prices on Eboy are about $300 plus. I'd say if you have one channel with some hope in it? And not interested.. $wise or time wise.. Sell it or trade it for something. It's probably repairable and has some cool front end features like lamp lighting when you get a channel locked in instead of a meter.

Other thing neg. is solder joints and thin leads are hard to work and technics (panasonic) didn't put in beefy thicker pcb's. with larger solder pads like their mother ship boards. But technics packs a punch in the 100+ watt range low THD.

Again if not interested in the expense put up an add $40 best offer or trade is the usual around where I am. it starts up!

I've had an SA200 since new and assume they're similar and I 100% agree with Nashvillebill. Maybe use it to learn something but don't spend anything on it. Even in mint condition mine was.....well... OK. It did me until I joined AK and found that there were many better options out there.

Yeah probably just a slight power difference
I would apprecitae if someone would give me some troubleshooting advice

Well, you really ought to try cleaning the switches, volume control etc. If you don't want to deplete your supply of DeOxit start with a can of CRC 2-26, which is about $3 from Home Depot.

No home depot here Maybe Lowes has it too
I will give it a quick blast
never seen that bring back a totally dead channel though

Not a great sounding piece new straight out of the box. Mrs. H had one when we were first dating - it was a thin and two-dimensional sounding piece of hardware (my reference point at the time being my Yamaha CA-610II amplifier). No, I didn't say this to her at the time ;-)

I gave up and listed it
I decided to list it whole in case there is someone out there who knows how to make it run again
If it doesnt sell I will break it up
