Has anyone else followed the ongoing drama with “The Guess Who”? It’s an interesting story - most know that Burton Cummings and Randy Bachman wrote all/most of the great Guess Who songs. They also own the publishing rights to all these songs. Shortly after the Guess Who stopped performing their ex drummer did a sneaky thing and copyrighted the name “The Guess Who”. Then he created a new band and toured as “The Guess Who” without any approval from Burton or Randy. This new band played covers of all the great Bachman/Cummings songs claiming to be “The Guess Who”. They even promoted their upcoming shows using the original songs. This was a ripoff pure and simple. Well recently Cummings with Bachman's support pulled all the publishing rights to their music which meant two things, 1. no more royalties for the music and 2. nobody could play their music. This resulted in the fake “The Guess Who” having to cancel their shows and not being allowed to use the original songs.
If you bought tickets to see “The Guess Who” you have been scammed and likely your show cancelled.
Cummings and Bachman tour under their own names and do play the original songs as they own them.
