The Technics Roll continues... now an SA-424!

Breaking records is good?
Just picked up one of these totally mint for $8.98 at the thrift. And geez does this thing look fantastic! Even the metal colored parts of plastic look new. Typical of the early 80s "New Class A" receivers, but using two STK power packs. While my sound testing was pretty much non eventful I did notice one thing... It has a very good tuner. Very sensitive. I hooked up nothing more than a 6 inch piece of wire in the basement and it was getting all sorts of stations. I actually was quite impressed by its sensitivity overall. Certainly among the better at pulling in stations in the basement. Gonna hook it up upstairs and see what it can really do in the next few day.

Aside from that, this is the second receiver of the year already, and, thats a heck of a lot of Technics stuff I have found in the last year... C'mon folks someone out there wants to donate an SA-1000 I just know it! ;)

Congratulations on your Technics score. All I can say is I wish I had your thrift stores here in Indianapolis. All I can find here is mostly cheap plastic all in one stuff. I have only had one good score in the last couple years. I got a Marantz 2230 and pair of Rat Shack speakers for $15.00. I usually get most of my stuff from eBay.

Yrly -- Congrats on your good fortune! Those little Technics units sure packed a lot of 'high tech" into a low price. Good luck on getting your SA-1000. Make sure you do alot of back strengthening execises! Happy New Year!

Gotta be patient with the thrifts, the dry spell between my Fisher RS-1058 and Sansui 990DB was LONG (probably a good year and a half), I found a handful of stuff between there. Only the Olson RA-250 and a couple of lower end things at the $5 Goodwill (I did pass on the broken Sansui 5000X at the $5 Goodwill during that period, and a smaller later Sansui digital thing from the 80s). Then after the 990DB stuff was turning up so much that I was actually not buying stuff. Was decent stuff I got too, Marantz Model 30, Fisher RS-914, Rat Shack STA-2250, Pioneer SX-6, Philips 797 etc. and most of it was dirt cheap on top of that. Most expensive had to have been the $35 I spent on that complete Sanyo system at the $5 Goodwill and that included its Polk speakers. I just drop in and look, expect nothing and hope for the best. IMO Ebay is best for finding poorly listed sleeper receivers, trying to buy anything remotely known unless it is misspelled usually equates to a high cost.

Technics stuff has in generally been turning up quite frequently recently. I even pointed one of my friends at work to a complete Technics system at Goodwill (was a duplicate of one I already had, so I was not going to buy two). Mostly CD players and cassette decks but there were a few decent receivers and amplifiers that turned up this past year. This one is in particularly nice shape though, it would be hard to replace it with a better looking one unless you found one NOS. While cosmetics make it nice to look at I still would not invest solely for them (except in the case of the Yorx M2402 ;) ) I am more concerned about how well it works. I have not yet had a chance to bring this upstairs and hook it up but maybe in the next couple of days.

Yrly,

It's been a few months now... any word on how this sa-424 baby sounds? I may be able to get my hands on one also... :naughty:

Thrift stores in my area sell the good stuff to the pawn shops and put out non-working crap for suckers to buy.

Ok, got the camera right here so I will go snap a photo. Ironically, the Technics roll continues, got that SA-616 receiver just a few weeks back. I think this thing sounds OK hooked it up to the EV Fours, not the best out there not the worst. I think it nice enough, decent receiver but nothing I would write home about, SA-616 is a little bit better I think :). The SA-424 has pretty decent FM reception in the basement, which is always a good sign. I would buy it if I could get it cheap enough, I would not shell out big bucks for it, but if its in good condition its worth more than what I paid.
