Two Receivers - One Set of Speakers/Turntable

This might be a stupid question, but here goes. If you have two receivers, each with differing qualities.....is it possible to hook them both up to the a single set of speakers, turntable and other components and simply switch between the two receivers?

Do it the hard way a while....swap cables on each.

You'll probably end up listening to one more than the other....just keep listening to that one :D

I gather using switchers is un-"audiophile" in most audio circles. I've done some research and decent is $99, good can run $300. I'm still on the fence about getting one and will prolly just end up turning my amps sideways and making new connections when i want to change the set-up. I made sure i have 2 fee of slack on my speakers cables for that purpose. Fairly painless to do with a Flexy style cabinet like i recently put together.

The problem with using a speaker switcher in reverse is that choosing the "A+B" position on the switcher will connect the receivers in parallel across the speaker load. The typical result of this kind of connection is blown output transistors on one or both of the receivers. All it takes is one brief accident to melt your output devices into slag.

vinyldavid's advice is worth following, IMO.

It is preferrable that the switch is "break before make" to avoid a temporary parallel connection as just mentioned. Especially if the speakers are less than 8 ohms and either amp isn't rated to do below 4 ohms. Be sure also to have the levels all the way down when switching. If one of the amps has a cap coupled output, power it down and wait a little bit before switching to let the caps discharge. Good question to ask! :thmbsp:

I bought one on these (Niles DPS1), just got it in the mail, haven't used it yet, still working on getting my tube receiver running. I am going to use it to switch between my Yamaha CR2020 and my Fisher 400, feeding into my EV speakers. It is well built and I think it is worth every penny. I got mine at Amazon, free shipping. Reviews on the internet have been very good about it.
