Time to upgrade my DVD player. I'm looking at universal models that will play every disc under the sun. Audio quality is a priority of video quality.
besides the Denon players (2900, 3910, 5900) which seem to garner excellent reviews, are there any other players i should take a serious look at?

Pioneer 563A. Least i think thats the model.

Tis the season :thmbsp:

Many manufacturers have released new universal players, including quite affordable new models from Toshiba, Panasonic, Pioneer, etc.

A bit further up the chain can get you into Onkyo, Marantz, the Denon (2910 now) and many many more.

Unfortunately I have no experience with the latest models, and the ones I own from Pioneer and Philips (and Sony if you discount DVD-A) have been discontinued. While I can't comment on the latest, I preferred Pioneer to Toshiba, Philips to Pioneer, didn't hear much difference between the Philips and the Denon (bought the Philips due to discontinued pricing).

I like my Pioneer DV-563A, plays anything, and not had a problem yet with at least 2 movies a day for the past 6 months.

The Denons have top notch line doublers for great progressive scan video and possess the Burr-Brown DACs for better audio. You do pay a premium over the Toshiba, Pannies, or Pioneer models. If you are just getting into SACD-DVDa to see if it is your cup of tea, I would try the Pioneer 563A due to pricing alone. You can't find much more for the meager sum. If DVDs are your main reason, and daily/dual use is possible then buy the better built Denon models.

Cheers,

I have a Yamaha C750 universal changer and like it a lot. However, with universal players, you may want to find one that has full bass management control. I had to buy an Outlaw ICBM to get my player setup properly for my speakers. I only use it for sound, but I have heard that it has a great picture, too.

I have also owned a Denon DVDA player (DVD1600) and if you have the money, I think they make some great quality players. The Denon player I owned also had a fabulous picture to go with it's great sound quality.

There is a fair review of the Yammy at the link below:
