upgrading/modding the MA230

anyone know of a reasonable mod to bringing the s/s preamp circuit in the MA230 up to a decent quality?

it doesn't sound BAD, just not as good as some of the s/s stuff that exists today - but the power amp is quite nice -

just wondering if there are any "known" mods to this guy
Thanks

I also have a Mac MA-230. It was my first Mac piece and I was very impressed with its quality construction and sound. I have since modified mine to be used with my MX-110 as a standalone tube amp, bypassing the SS pre. Mine is otherwise bone stock. I will be converting it back to its original configuration but also want to improve the pre section. Do a search on the Mac forum. There are threads discussing what improvements can be made. If I recall they are not mods but replacement of caps with newer high quality caps (paper and oil?). I think the transistors can also be replaced with newer quieter transistors.

Might be worth having a peek into the McIntosh "Hints & Kinks" sticky.

Sounds like a good question for Terry D.
