Using a Phono preamp???

Most likely some sort of grounding issue, I would start at the cartridge and work towards the amp. Until this issue is resolved purchasing an outboard phono stage would be a waste of money.

Yes, I literally just set up my first separate phono preamp this week. It's the Sutherland Duo and it way outclasses the rest of my system (except maybe my speakers), but I got a super deal on it, I couldn't resist. I haven't given it too much time yet, but so far so good. My system is fairly modest (Adcom GFA 5500 recently recapped), but it does sound pretty great.

I'm using the Denon DL-110 on a vintage Dual 601. The Duo gives choices for load and gain... I was not positive which settings I should use, but I used the 47k load and 58dB gain setting. It sounds excellent, but not sure if I can eek more from it with other settings. I'll experiment at some point.

I also have a couple other turntables I plan to restore and incorporate in my setup. An Empire 398 that I will pair with the Denon 103 and a SUT, as well as a Lenco L75 that currently has a Shure cart on it from the seller. I'm not Shure (ha!) which cart I will eventually keep on the Lenco, but I plan for that to be my main deck once I get it set up.

Yes, 47k is right for the load but I'd recommend a bit less gain, probably 52dB.

I have a Simaudio LP5.3 that I purchased for the eventual day that I wanted to try a moving coil cartridge. It has been used with various Shure V15 and Audio Technica mm carts until now. I have just purchased a Hana low output moving coil that will work fine with the 5.3 and will set up this weekend. Can’t wait.

I use a slightly modded Bottlehead Seduction into a 21st century Vincent integrated amp into a 1970's Dual 1219 with a Shure v15 type iii. Works for me. :)

Grado Statement Sonata 2 Cartridge (Moving Iron, 1.0mv output) with an Audio Research PH3 Phono Stage (54db gain).

Ok so Blue wants me to ask a specific question. So here we go. I am using a 2m Bronze, Cardas iridium interconnect and will be plugging it all into a vintage tube amp. What do we think is going to be a good phono stage?

I used a 2M Bronze for 4 years into a Graham Slee Era Gold V. Now a 2M Black - 1 yr. Works very well and no capacitance troubles.

Zavfino arm cable from SL1210/Tabriz.

This is a great thread!

A compendium of successful cartridge/phono stage pairings from the user community.

Right now running my Garrard Zero 100s with a Shure M75/Jico elliptical over a Little Bear T10 tube preamp into a Sonab R3000 amp. Works for me!

OK so I bought a Vincent pho-8 and yes it did give me the buzz. I pulled out my 2m Bronze and replaced it with an OM 10 and no more buzz. I have never seen a cart go bad. Is this possible and if it is can it be remedied? I am on the look out for a new cart and think I need to avoid Ortofon for now. I like the sound I am getting from the OM 10 but the sound stage is very compressed.

Maybe you can check the 2M with a meter and see if it is bad. Maybe a discussion with Ortofon after you take a look at it to firmly put the issue onto the 2M and they may help.

I have a 2M Bronze and that happened to me out of the blue after it had been fine. Make sure that the tonearm wire connector attached to the ground pin on the cart is pressed firmly all the way in and making contact with the little ground strap coming out of the cart body.

You can build the CNC phnostage for MM carts https://www.audiokarma.org/forums/i...igh-end-phono-stage-no-expense-spared.371889/
and AD797 phonostage for MC carts https://audiokarma.org/forums/index.php?threads/ad797-phono-stage-build-and-help-desk-thread.501186/
Both are excellent and can be built easily. The sq is much better than many of the expensive phonostage.

Both of these can be adapted to provide the optimum recommended capacitive load very easily, one part in each channel.

Also, The Rod Elliot project P06 here provides the same capability.

All three are excellent choices and will sound great one completed.

Done right, they may cost a bit more then the budget phono preamps out there but they perform on a level that would cost you several hundred dollars more then that.

Loving the DB Systems Phono 8 with 2a external Power Supply.

Perhapsan OM 30 stylus with open thinks up for you. It’s the Bronze equivalent in the OM series. OEM stylus are available.

Well here is what happened, I put the Bronze back on the tone arm and for giggles I swapped the “grounds” green and blue. I held my breathe and low and behold no buzz!! Not exactly sure what I did but it worked. I kinda figured it would be something amazingly simple.

Glad you have it working again. It did seem like something that a retry might cure, happy you are back in 2M Bronze territory.

Thanks Blue it was heartbreaking going backwards like that. It was equally embarrassing putting an OM10 on. Prime Scout.

Now you have a chance to opine on the difference you might hear between the onboard and outboard phono sections. Of course we would all be glad to read your observations.
