Which Budget Amp or Preamp & Amp to pair this Turntable & Speakers combo?

Hi all,

I appreciate that this kind of thing gets asked over and over again, and here I am adding to the pile. Apologies in advance. Yes, I'm a noob to this.

I think I primarily need advice on an amp, or preamp and amp, to pair with the turntable and speakers mentioned below.

I enjoy vinyl and my funds are limited (toss up between personal gratification and kids' education).

For a turntable, I have my eyes set on the Pro-Ject Debut Carbon.

For speakers, the Pioneer SP-FS-52s.

The above is based so far entirely on spending way too much time on the internet, reading lots of reviews and forum threads (with the occasional youtube video thrown in for good measure).

What can I do, amp-wise, to get the most out of the turntable and speaker combo above, within a $300 to $500 budget?

Good choice on the turntable and speakers. At some point you should really try to get a subwoofer(s) to help out on the low end. You can get a low price sub from Monoprice or Parts Express for $100-$150. As far as an integrated amp, I'd head over to accessories4less and look at the Onkyo 9050 or Yamaha s500. Both run about $300. Pair one of those amps along with a budget subwoofer and you'll have a very respectable 2 channel system. Good luck!

I appreciate the recommendations. Many thanks!

Well first of all reconsider your turntable selection. There have been lots of issues with that table, and some people have been able to work through them, others not so lucky. This is a polarizing table, with lots of love and hate for it. And the hate seems to be justified. Personally I would be looking more at a U turn Orbit Plus for that kind of money.

As far as an amplifier, you don't specify new or used, how much power you want/need, adn what your budget is.

If I were trying to maximize the dollars spent, I think I would head to Ebay and buy a nice condition Adcom amp and pre amp. Look for the amps with the 4 digit model number, as they are newer and not have some of the service issues the older 3 digit amps did. Then find a nice Adcom pre that fits in your budget. You should be able to buy both pieces for a few hundred dollars. I believe this way you will get quality sound at a modest price.

Right, no budget listed. Good point! I'm hoping for between $200 to $300. As far as power, I really don't know I'm afraid. Let's blame that on "noobness." I'd prefer to buy new, as I don't have the know-how to evaluate the condition of used audio gear.

Thanks for your reply - much appreciated.

As a happy U-turn Orbit plus owner,I would agree with Mr. Pig.And the great thing is you can customize it any way you want.I would also second the accessories4less suggestion as far as amps go.

Well there are well cared for ones on the Bay, and you do have buyers protection on the transaction.$200 to $300 isn;t going to get you a lot in the new market, and quite often stuff is of sketchy build quality. If going strictly new, then an integrated amp is likely to be the best choice. Perhaps something along the lines of the NAD 316Ee integrated. It is a bit over budget, but perhaps you can find a deal on one if you search diligently. The NAD have a stout power supply, put out a ton of current and sound more powerful than their conservative power rating suggests. Still, its not going to perform like an Adcom amp and pre combo though.
