Since I have nothing better to do than dredge up 10 year old threads...
I got my CDX-720 in the summer of 1989 while I was stationed overseas in Panama. I went through the AAFES catalog and where possible, I tried to order stuff that wasn't available in the Continental US- just to have something "unique." So that's probably why there's not a lot of info on these units... not really available in the US- or just to US servicemen overseas...
There was another CD player in the Yamaha lineup that had the same "too fancy for it's own good" door opening system- the 720 was what I could order.
I had it sent to my parents' house in the States, I didn't see it until a year or so later- and it didn't work. The door opening drive system was completely stupid and useless. I do remember that it was an expensive piece. I really never used it. I still actually have it, the remote and manual down in the basement- I think I've taken it apart a few times... still doesn't work- but reading that it was $430 in 1989... that was a pretty exclusive piece...
