Open question for Marantz fans.

I own a Marantz SR-640. Probably a mid-80's relic but my garage doesn't
care and I think it sounds great. From an early age I've heard of Marantz
and my question is, could some one please give me a brief summary of
this maker? It was originally made in the states right?

My SR-640 was purchased roughly 7 years ago at a modest price but
I know that there is a reason that Marantz is a collectors dream and
like alot of other manufacturers, began fabrication in asian countries.

I'm guessing at alot of the above and I'd love to hear more of the story!
