Woofer I.D. Please

I picked up a pair of Paradigm speakers that had a non-original 8" woofer substitution. Its a Made in Canada unit with foam surround and cone texture reminiscent of an API product.

I've included pictures with the code # and hope that someone recognizes the identity of this woofer.

Doesn't look like any API code I've seen, I don't recognize that woofer at all

It was just the texture on the cone surface and colour being identical to early Energy ESM and Image speakers that I thought API.

As you said the code doesn't seem familiar, but i'm wondering what other Canadian manufacturer would have used that same cone material.

Also of note may be the surround atop gasket design if that is significant towards the I.D.

It's those dustcaps and thick looking surround that is throwing me for a loop, unless they were refoamed and had new caps glued on. Paradigm did use that texture cone on their original monitor series (control, export, esprit etc..) but used cast baskets. Hopefully some knows, I just can't think of anything else at the moment.
 
Just thinking, maybe a woofer from an older paradigm PDR-8 ? I'd call paradigm to see if it's one of their codes.

It appears to me that these are original as new with no signs of work done.

You're spot on with the textured cone on the original Monitor series as these are Control monitors with one of those woofers you speak of. Only thing is the Paradigm pattern is no where near as fine as the mystery one.

As to the subwoofer idea, that sounds like you've got something there since I've seen subs with the heavier stiff foam surrounds. Definitely worth enquiring into.

I think i might have found it, I just remembered My energy e:XL-S12 sub has a very similar dustcap and cone material...the e:XL-S8 looks very close to yours, I'll pull my sub and see if it has a similar tag. Might still be an API tag just haven't seen one like it before.

I had Export monitors and miss them...beautiful veneer on those

Whoa!! Looks like you're getting real close there. Really appreciate your efforts.

My pair needs some work to bring back that beautiful veneer, but I'd like to find an original woofer before I put in the effort and experience what you've been missing.
 
Well what do you know, here's my 12 incher from an Energy e:xl-S12. You do have an Energy e:xl-S8 sub driver in there.

I do believe mystery's solved. Excellent work Sherlock.

Now to the task of tracking down a proper replacement without pushing cost over the value of the speakers.

I guess the only difference being the sub magnet is vented for greater power handling. Man, those Canadians are smart!
 
One other possibility, just to "stir the pot"... I just refoamed a pair of woofers from a Tannoy C8 pair... they looked EXACTLY like the woofer in the first post, even down to the "made in Canada" sticker". Here's a pic I found, of a pair:

Other than the foam trim ring (which is a separate part from the woofer), note that it looks just like the OP's woofer...

AFAIK, API was making drivers for Tannoy in those days... for at least some of the non-dual-concentric (i.e, separate woofer and tweeter) models.

Gordon's correct. I just refoamed a pair of C6's and the woofer magnet was identical. I should have seen the similarity. The C6 and C8 were both made in Canada for Tannoy. Fine small speakers, by the way.

Found this pic for a Tannoy replacement and I can definitely see the resemblance on the back view although the front components are a bit off.

It seems there are common parts from a central supply that are custom assembled for each speaker company, which makes it hard to figure out unless the driver as a whole will match mine.

I think it's gonna have to come right down to identifiying the code #.

Y'all are making it interesting.

Thats a different woofer with 4 holes vs. 8 and a thinner foam surround, the woofer from the energy sub is Identical from the front...though both are obviously from the same family...i still don't think you have the Tannoy version.

I do agree on those points. The 4 hole was due to this being the 6.5" model as I didn't find a representative one for the 8".

Looks like mine is a hybrid of your Energy front elements with the Tannoy back.

Again, only the model numbers will tell the whole story.
