Dumbest thing you ever did?

Once when I was about eight years old, I'd get home from school and there
would be a can of pop waiting for me in the refrigerator to enjoy after school
while I sat in the living room and watched TV.

Well, one day while getting my can of pop out of the refrigerator, I dropped
the can on the floor (today's flavor was Mason's Root Beer)... I proceeded
to go into the living room and open my can of pop... well, this was my first
introduction to what happens to a carbonated beverage after it gets shook
up a bit...

The entire can shot all over the living room... we had to take the drapes
down and send them to the dry cleaners, furniture cleaners had to come
in and clean the couch and chairs and even the carpet... luckily, the pop
washed off all of the walls where we didn't have to repaint the living room!

Went to a friend's house and offered to make dessert. Bananas Foster, which is butter and brown sugar brought to a boil in a pan (very hot), put in the bananas, pour in the rum, flambe and serve. Great recipe to show off your chef skills to your friends. Only I used Bacardi 151. WHOOOMPHH!

Here's another one:
When I was about 18 I found a classical guitar in the neighbor's garbage. It had the headstock broken off. I decided I would repair it and use it. At the time I had done very little guitar repair work, and my repair was inexpert. I glued the headstock back on and added 2 aluminum strips, one on the front and one on the back, to support it, attached with screws. It actually held! Anyway a friend played it and he liked it better than his Alvarez Yairi classical. This was a really nice guitar. He traded me the Yairi for my "Frankenstein" guitar. He made a new headstock for the "Frankenstein" and everything was fine. We were at a party (not even drinking, mind you) and he passed the guitar to me to check out. When I went to give it back to him, just kidding around I made as if to throw it to him. The guitar slipped out of my hands and he caught it and flipped backwards in his chair. the headstock broke off. He said, "I'll take my Yairi back now."

Oh wow... SOOOO much stipidity in 47 years and such a poor memory of most of it...

1) Two company Christmas parties on the same Saturday night. Both with open bars. My TR7 was never quite the same after that.

2) Same TR7, averaging over 120 MPH down the Florida Turnpike. If you absolutely HAVE to go to jail make it the Palm Beach County Jail. As nice a facility as you could ever want to spend a day in.

3) Chain saw + 6-pitch roof + several Anchor Porters (good stuff BTW) = a lifelong scar on ones left shin.

4) A jetski plus a copius amount of beer is a recipe for a near disaster. Who says you can't sink a jetski.

5) A 15 year old in boat 1 (16' ski boat with a 150 Merc outboard), a 13 year old in boat 2 (8' aluminum john boat with a 15 Evinrude), a game of cat and mouse on a large lake. Several results. (1) someone's going to get wet (2) Patching fiberglass isn't cheap (3) Dad now owns one fewer boats (4) Said lake is surprisingly deep (5) Trying to raise boat 2 using a rope from the side of boat 1 will VERY nearly sink boat 1.

6) ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS discharge a picture tube before reaching in to pull the HV lead. Especially when holding the neck with the other hand.

Credo at 18: Bones heal... Chicks dig scars... Glory is forever.
Credo at 47: If you're going to be stupid you'd better be tough

In the early 70's triggering a laser start circuit with a screwdriver (but it had a plastic handle...).. other hand was near ground..... zapped through chest.
Involuntary recoil:
1. knocked over full, heavy filing cabinet(several hundred pounds)
2. sore throat later from "shout", buddy's ears ringing
3. screwdriver went THROUGH 1" thick SOLID plaster (with wire mesh)wall and stayed there.....
4. lost watch for 4 days, as it flew off of wrist
5. Loss of consciousness for long enough to scare the sh&^ out of buddy...
6. Never figured out where that burned smell came from

after action critique evaluated voltage at 50 KV, across some significant capacitance....

Needless to say I'm a lot more careful around second anode leads etc...

Incident CAN be verified...
(we had snuck into school (LTHS, Chicago) to work on the laser at 6 am....)

Was helping a friend with some carb work on a fairly new Firebird with either a 400 or 455 in it. Nice car. Got some gas spilled on the intake manifold and was tightening a bolt on the manifold, shorted the choke wire between the wrench and manifold which caused a spark and ignited the fuel on top of the engine.

Looked pretty cool with about 1' high flames everywhere. Luckily, car was in my garage and I grabbed a just washed and folded bedspread from the top of the dryer and threw it on top of the engine. Snuffed out the flames.

The friend was pretty upset. I wasn't, although, I was glad I didn't burn the whole house down.

I like to commute to work on my motorcycle. One thing that you just have to do when you are in gridlock on the expressway is to ride between the cars up to the next traffic light, then run out ahead of them when the light goes green. The car drivers hate this, but really, you are doing them a favor, reducing the gridlock. One day I went ahead and did this even though I was going to turn left at the light. Cars were piled up at the light 300 feet or so, everyone was waiting through three or four cycles of the light to get through. So I thread my way slowly up to the front, wait for the light at the front, and as soon as I saw green I gave the Kawa 750 a big handful of throttle and took off. I got halfway across the cross road when a Winnebago went flying through the intersection from my right, moving at least 40 Mph. He had run the light, and I missed him by no more than a foot. He never even tried to slow down. Scared doesn't even come close to describing how I felt. I have actually crashed a couple of times and not been scared that badly. So I don't do that anymore, I sit at the light for a few seconds before leaving, no matter what.

128 in a 55 = no license for 6 mo.

Drinking an entire pitcher of combat juice = puke everywhere...in your car, dorm room, etc.

Passing out in a girl's dorm room = waking up at 6 am, buck naked, with calculus problems written all over you in permanent marker and you have to walk across campus wearing nothing but a sheet in February, thru the snow, in 10 degree weather, to get home

Riding your motorcycle thru the dorms at 3 am = a visit with the Dean of Students.

Pledging an 'Animal House' fraternity = getting run over accidentally by a carload of frat boys in a 72 Olds station wagon with snow tires, leaving knee damage for life.

Who says I didn't learn anything in college?

No one's done anything dumb in two years!?!?!

Time for a revival!

Mine:

Pissing off the father at 7 years old while white-water-rafting. I was a relentless little kid. He got so pissed off he let the cord go and I was on my own on the rapids. Grew me up quite quickly!!! Kind of fun, looking back, but I was scared shitless at the time.

Hmm what else. Many a party ending in drunken fighting or puke. Or both.

Once, me and about ten buddies went to this club in Manhattan and got so, so messed up that I don't even remember coming home. I just kind of woke up in my house...somehow. Oy. I have calmed down a LOT since high school.

Your turn!

PS: Sansui Louie, the only solid thing I've learned in college so far is how to stock a tiny minifridge. Just yesterday, in preparation for the labor day festivities, I managed to fit 60 (Sixty) cans of budweiser and coors in my little fridge. I was very proud of that!!!!

Slipped while coming down some porch steps carrying a JBL L100. To save my ass I had to push the speaker away from my body, which sent it crashing to a concrete walkway where it bounced down two more concrete steps to the sidewalk. I landed on my ass, and the JBL was history, all in less than 5 seconds. I refered to it as "5 Seconds To Mono".

I was a freshman at Michigan State in a dorm full of wanna-be engineers. Somebody found an access hole in a panel in the side of the elevators that allowed us to open the door with a long screwdriver, which in turn stopped the elevator.

If you timed it right you could stop the elevator so there was a cross beam adjacent to the opening and all but one could climb out of the elevator, step on the cross beam, and climb back on top of the elevator, where we found a simple control box. We're riding the elevator! Waa-hoo!

The box could send the car to the basement at any time, so we would mess with people by watching them through the fan and just before they got to their floor we would send the car to the basement. Quite amusing.

Anyway, we're at the basement and someone gets in and punches a floor. I decide to watch the bottom of the shaft recede, so I lean over the back of the elevator. A few seconds later someone grabs me by the shirt collar and pulls me upright -- just as the tons of lead elevator counterweight slid down the back of the elevator.

I could have been beheaded right there and then.

Still shudder when I think about it...

Dumb Luck
141 in a 65 - '69 Mustang 351 Windsor downhill with a tailwind > cool > then > Radar > Roadblock > oops

Cop runs up to car and screams "Do you know how fast you were going?"
"No, Officer. The spedometer only goes to 120" says I.
$250 to get out of jail
Go to court on my birthday, show up late.
When the judge demands to know why I was late I hand the bailiff my stolen car report. Judge laughs. Laywer doesn't show. Cops do. In court from 10-5:30 waiting on lawyer. Judge doesn't want to continue case. Asks if I'm enjoying my birthday. I tell him I'll stand mute and throw myself on his mercy. Judge convicts me of 16-20 over and I forfeit my bond. Judge wished me a happy birthday.

then there was wife #2...

This one is more embarrassing than dangerous. Me and the wife in DC, shorts, cameras, the whole tourist thing. Walking a block or two off the Natl Mall. Hey, let's find a bathroom. Pick an office building. This was pre-9-11 so things were not so crazy then. Walk in, there's a metal detector flanked by armed Marines in dress uniforms. "Uh, y'all have a bathroom we could use?"

"No, I'm sorry sir."

"I thought maybe there'd be something out here in the lobby, outside security.'

"This is the State Department, sir."

What a coupla hicks! Walking into the State Department asking to use the can. I bet they had a good laugh after we left.

I did mine last week.

I had my first vacation in a looooong time last week. My lovely wife and stepdaughter told me it would be lovely to take a trip to Amish Country. We'd eat Amish food, groove on the horse and buggy doohickeys and browse the antique stores.

It sounded good to me.

I should have smelled a rat.

We get onto the road into Lancaster county and stop in the first antique store, where I got a steal on a Ceramic Clad Dutch Oven and a #5 Griswold frying pan.
So far, I was a happy man wth two gorgeous women in tow (and my credit card stashed at home).

We pulled into the Red Roof inn about 2pm, and My lovely bride said to my lovely step-daughter "Oh look, there's an outlet mall across the street! Let's go after lunch!"

Lunch was at the Good & Plenty Restaurant, where we, indeed had good food and plenty of it.

I should have smelled a rat.

We pull into the Outlet mall and immediately head to the office to get a discount card. Hmmmmmm, how did they know the outlet mall had a discount card?

They had it planned all along!!!!! They knew there was an outlet mall!!!!!!

They first store was the Coach outlet. Who the hell pays $800 for a friggin' purse??????My wife and stepdaughter did, and The Lovely Blanche "borrowed" the cash from me to do it...and the passport holder...and the wallet that matched it.

After that was the crystal store. Oy vey. I bought a $12 knife sharpener and $60 worth of Blue Willow soup bowls. They dropped another $500 each!

Mercifully, the next few hours were a blur, and when I woke up the next morning, my $2000 had dwindled to $30. We were there for two more days.

Men: Is it that I'm a sucker, or has this happened to you too?
Women: Is this standard practice, and if so, what did we do to deserve this?

Boggy- If you ever come down here DON'T bring them...There's a place called Pigeon Forge, over near Gatlinburg at the Nat'l Park...They have about 3 different locations of Outlet Malls there... So damn big, they even have shops that have Guy Stuff in 'em...Smoky Mtn Knifeworks comes to mind, but the gals like that place too...We have all sorts of places to seperate Damyan..Erm, Tourists from their money...

Oh, & another STUPID thing I did when I was a sprout was to Pee on an Electric Fence....This is NOT something you really want to do. Trust yer ol' Unca Sandy on this one. ESPECIALLY an Electric Fence that is a "Bull Dozer" brand.

Dumbest thing..........spoke the words, "I do", when my mind was yelling, "I don't". Thinking with the little head.

Back in '84 I did'nt do something, which was the dumbest thing I ever did. After serving 8 years in the Corps, I applied to the Maryland State Police. Passed the exam, went to the first part of the interview, did'nt go back for the final part of the interview for a stupid reason that would'nt have made any difference as I was told later by a Trooper.
