Something tells me OEM tweets will sound better than whatever you decide to toss into the scenario, although it'd be interesting to hear those Heils.
Chari, I believe Infinity EMITs were ribbon tweeters, no? I personally don't much care for their sound. I used to, but there is something unnatural about them.

The Heil tweeter is unlike any ribbon (not really what it is I guess) tweeter I've heard. Very natural sounding. Radiates sound from both front and back. Very life-like soundstage. I hear things in the music that make me turn my head to see what is behind me, and that is in the basement cavern.
Aaron, you'll have to stop up and have a listen, or I can lug the beasts down to your place for a listen. The big Kennys driving these effcient speakers may be fun.

Infinity EMITs are regular push-pull planar magnetic drivers. They consist of an etched voice coil on a Mylar backing placed between two layers of Samarium-Cobalt "Rare Earth" magnets. They could be viewed as borderline quasi-ribbon similar to Apogee drivers except the all edges are secured to the rest of the diaphragm vs. being suspended just on the short ends. A true ribbon tweeter is just a strip of very thing metal foil, typically 5.8micron Aluminum, connected at the short ends crimped in a saw-tooth pattern to allow for some flex in length and suspended inside an intense magnetic field (0.5 Tesla or higher) created by a strip of "rare earth" magnets on either side. A true ribbon tweeter like this is something special that no regular heavy dynamic driver (like the original Beryllium domes) can compete with and only an ionic/plasma tweeter can beat.Inspiribomb said:
As to the EMIT tweeters, there were some excellent units and some just a bit below. Your former Infinities were one of the budget models with the budget EMITs. Beyond that, the main issue with EMITs sound unnatural or adding an "etch" to the music is not due to the drivers themselves but due to the crossover, ime. In my Infinity Quantum 2s with the bigger, better EMITs, I was able to cure this etch by replacing the cheap metalized polyethylene caps with Solens polyprops bypassed with 1mfd Wima MKP4 caps (same used in the TOTL B&Ws) that I surprisingly had floating around in my junk box. Also, the EMITs and similar planar drivers from Infinity, such as the EMIMs, EMIRMs, and L-EMIMs are very revealing of the upstream components and so will sound good or bad depending upon what's feeding them.
Whew, hang out on AK long enough and you get pretty good at shoveling it. :thmbsp:

Probably easier for me to haul the L-09's over, as they have convenient carry handles. I'd love to hear them sometime.
