AU-717 with Remote Control?

I would love for someone to either direct me to an informative site, or to explain it to me personally, the different uses of the protected switch on the back of the AU-717.

***But more immediately if someone could help with my current application I'd be grateful. This probably sounds super-cheesy, but here goes:
I just got hold of a Panasonic Flat-Tube Television that has something called "BBE: High Definition Sound." This TV has one pair of output jacks labeled "To Audio Amp," and from the onscreen menu one can select 1. [internal] Speakers On, 2. Speakers Off & Fixed Audio Out, or 3. Speakers Off & Variable Audio Out.

I envision watching DVDs and controlling the volume of AU-717 with the TV's remote by going from the TV's jacks labeled "To Audio Amp," into the AU717's "Power Amp In" jacks, then selecting the third option: Speakers Off & Variable Audio Out, from the TV's menu.

I'm not sure if this maneuver will produce the desired results, but before I try it, could someone please tell me which position the protected switch on the back of the amp should be in:

a. Connected
b. Separated/direct coupled
c. Separated/capacitor coupled

If this would work, how also would I set the front of the amp?

...or advise me otherwise.

Thanks to all, TTone

If you want to control the volume with your TV volume control, I believe you will want to go out from the jacks on the TV labeled 'to audio amp' into a line level input on your amp, like aux, or tape one. Set the tv menu to Speakers Off & Variable Audio Out. You will have to experiment with the combination of the TV volume control and the Sansui volume control, but that shouldn't be a major undertaking.

You will get some benefit with this 'BBE' thing; however, the sound quality may be lacking. I believe the quality of the audio from the DVD player will be vastly superior to that of the TV. Some DVD players have sound enhancing circuits, too.

Give it a try. My TV has that feature, and I did. My little experiment lasted about thirty minutes. The sound quality wasn't there. My TV, however, does not have the BBE High Defnition Sound feature, so that may influence your experience.

Sorry I can't help you with the other issue on your Sansui.

a. Connected
Amp and preamp sections of the 717 are ready for duty as an 'integrated' unit (hence the name).
b. Separated/direct coupled
Amp and preamp are now disconnected each from the other. The 'preamp out' connections will function as the output of any preamp might, and the 'amp in' will function as the input of any amp, but the two may be used separately now. The 'direct coupled' refers to the method of coupling the input signal to the amp section, in this case meaning a 'straight wire' connection without any DC blocking capacitor, directly feeding the gate of the differential input stage FET. Any appreciable DC fed to the amplifier 'in' jacks with the switch in this position risks destruction of the amp. However, most preamps are capacitor coupled at their outputs and can safely drive the 717 inputs with the switch in this position.
c. Separated/capacitor coupled
Again, the amp and preamp are now disconnected each from the other and can be used separately, but in this case the amplifier input is coupled through a pair of back-to-back electrolytic capacitors to ensure that the amp cannot be subjected to dangerous DC. If you doubt the integrity of the incoming signal, this is the position to use.

/end tutorial

If you use the variable output of the TV to drive the amp section of the 717, the only front panel control that matters is the speaker select switch...all others are the domain of the preamp and effectively disabled by the movement of the rear switch to either position 'b' or 'c' as described above.

It doesn't take a huge amount of voltage input to drive the 717 to some pretty loud levels. If you try this, set the speaker select switch to 'off', turn the volume on the TV all the way down, then turn the speakers 'on' and slowly bring the volume up. This will prevent launching a woofer across the room from overdriving the amp from an inadvertent signal which is a tad 'hot'.

As an aside, I'm doing something similar with my setup, but I'm just using one of my tape inputs for the variable output from the TV. There's no real need to drive the amp directly from the TV.

Remote Quality

Thanks to you both for the good posts.

I went into the "tape 2" jacks and it worked! Awww, the thrill of watching a movie, controlling the nuances of volume without getting up. It will take some more experimenting; I concur that quality is better when just running the DVD into the amp more directly, which would eliminate the remote volume control; my panasonic DVD player doesn't have a variable output.

Question (in general): When splitting the DVD signal, (such as running from the dvd, into tape 2, and then off the backside of these plugs at tape 2, into the tv)(sort of like, in series), is the signal cut in half? And if so, is it only cut in half when both receiving units are turned on?

sorry - not a Sansui question,
Ttone

That was a well crafted explanation about the Connected/Separated switching.

In fact it was soooo good, that I added it to our FAQ section at the top of the forum.

Thanks very much, Glenn!

Credit where credit is due.

Yes, that was an incredible response. (I didn’t fully express it before.) I don’t know where else I could have received such specific info!

Thanks EchoWars,
