A couple of capacitor questions:

Why the twelve-fold increase in C424 (from10/50 to 120/50)?

Why Nichicon FW series instead of the FG or KZ series?

Why Panasonic ECQ series vs. ECW? Voltage availability (it seems that the ECW aren't much smaller than 250V).

The capacitor C424 provides local DC filtering/decoupling for the phono stage and 10µF is really too small (probably a penny-pinching exercise). The 120µF/50V cap replacement was the largest capacitor that I had on hand that would fit in the available space; for comparison, the corresponding capacitor in the 2220B receiver phono stage is 100µF/50V.

The Nichicon FW is what I had on hand; Nichicon FG could be used as well, but the KZ series will likely be too big physically.

Panasonic ECW are polypropylene film and are physically much larger than the polyester ECQ types for the same capacitance, so ECW capacitors won't fit nicely in the available space. Also, I try to avoid installing any given capacitor much higher than the ground plane since this may lead to increased noise/hum pickup by the capacitor.

Were all the small "orange" caps signal path, this color was used in Pioneer/Sansui etc as "signal path."

Sound Impressions of Restoration/Upgrade

Before I started the restoration/upgrade, I listened to the Marantz 1090 for a couple of days. I even took a few notes of these initial listening impressions since I didn't want to rely on just my sonic memory (especially after a period of >1 month). The 1090, even in stock form, was pleasant to listen to, it does have the Marantz "house" sound: somewhat "warm" sounding with a full bass. It didn't sound as smooth as the early-to-mid 70s Marantzes that I have heard (e.g., the 2270 receiver or the capacitor-coupled 1060 integrated amp); it was more like the later 70s Marantzes (e.g., 1152DC, 170DC). I did make a note that the treble range was a bit "brash" sounding; nothing too obvious, but noticeable at higher sound levels and with recordings with lots of percussion or brass instruments.

In the ~4 weeks since the final upgrades to the 1090, its been played for a couple of hours most evenings. IMO, the restoration/upgrade has changed the sound for the better (did anyone expect otherwise?). The differences in sound are not "night and day", but are readily noticeable with attentive listening. Previous to the restoration/upgrade, as mentioned, the treble range was a bit "brash", but now the treble range is very natural sounding with lots of detail (e.g., the different cymbal sounds are easily discerned).
The sound of the bass range (<300Hz) has also changed, but not as much as was noticed in the treble range. The bass is now subjectively deeper and "tighter" sounding. I think that what is often referred to as "bass transients" is also better, but this may be attributed to an improvement in the reproduction of the middle frequencies. Indeed, reproduction of vocals does seem very clear now, all of the little vocal "ticks" and 'hiccups" are easily discerned and hard to decipher "mumbled" lyrics can now be understood.
An unexpected improvement was in the noise "floor"; there was a very slight background noise/hiss that was easily heard with the volume control turn up past 11 o'colck, but that is now completely absent, even with the volume set to maximum. At typical listening levels, the music seems to emerge from a "blacker" background silence. Playing CD and LP recordings that I'm very familiar with (e.g., Steely Dan/Aja; Miles Davis/Kind of Blue; Dire Straits/Love Over Gold; Beatles/Abbey Road; Fournier/Bach Solo Cello Suites; Duke Ellington Orchestra/Digital Duke), I was hearing the little details that are in the background much more clearly.

I have noticed that many on the Marantz forum have an admiration for the lower powered units. I do not think that is misplaced, the lower powered units often have a simpler signal path and this contributes to their good sound. I think that this is one reason that tube topologies often sound quite good, they have much simpler signal paths. What the lower models often lacked is the use of the best quality parts, e.g., whereas the higher and TOTL Marantz units would have film capacitors the lower units would have to make do with electrolytics or even ceramics. The sound of any unit is the result of the circuit topology and the implementation of the topology. The sound of a good vintage design can be much improved by upgrading with better parts that weren't available (or were deemed too costly by the bean counters) when the unit was originally manufactured. Conversely, a poor design will continue to sound poor even with the most costly capacitor upgrades. The 1090 is definitely in the former group; its design is quite advanced (e.g., fully discrete transistor design with a high capacity power supply; a DC-coupled main amp with class A driver stage; practical tone controls that can be switched out). Admittedly the build quality of the 1090 isn't as robust as the earlier series (and this cannot be changed) but its sound with the restoration/upgrade is without doubt, top tier.

Yes, all of the capacitors with the orange sleeves were in the signal path. These are "low leakage" types and used an epoxy seal rather than the usual rubber one at its base.
 
Comparison of distortion plots for a garden-variety (X7R) ceramic capacitor, a C0G/NPO capacitor and a polypropylene film/foil capacitor.

The X7R ceramic capacitor shows obvious distortion of the 1kHz signal; interestingly, the odd-order harmonics (which are more objectionable) are more prominent.

The C0G/NPO distortion is >125dB down, comparable to the polypropylene foil/film capacitor at -130dB.

That's a great set of articles by Mr. Bateman. It focuses on the question of subjectivity vs. objectivity (measurement) in the "sound" of various caps.
 
Very nice! :thmbsp: I really like the looks of the 1090, it looks like the early SS stuff, clean and simple.
 
Should the Q409 diode be replaced? It appears to be one fo the epoxy bead types, but I don't recognize the symbol on the schematic (2 anodes, 1 cathode) unless it means 2 diodes in series.
 
Replace with two 1N4148 or 1N4448 diodes in series.

+1, although the MV-13 diode isn't as prone to failure as the VD-1212 or VD1221 double diodes, its a good proactive replacement. I'll have to go back and install a pair of 1N4148 diodes in mine, just in case...
 
Bktheking borrowed the 1090 and measured the power output; he got 62 watts per channel into 8 ohms (1kHz, both channels simultaneously) before clipping. Not too shabby for an amplifier rated at 45 watts per channel.

Man that sounds like a real upgrade and a good setup.Now just send it to me and I'll send you mine and you can fix it since its on the blink an can't find a repair shop! Just kidding I hope I can learn to do some of these things myself because if not its all gonna be trash in time.

Did you at anytime during the build, pull the small ceramics, install the C0G (NP0) and then take a direct listen-just curious. Also did you use Vishay Cera-Mites?:scratch2:

I used AVX C0G 100V/5% capacitors for the 1090; I sourced from Mouser (http://ca.mouser.com/AVX/Passive-Co...-MLCC-Leaded/_/N-bw5t5Zscv7?P=1z0zlseZ1z0x1d4). I think that as long as you use C0G capacitors from a reputable manufacturer, there wouldn't be much difference between C0G capacitors.

I didn't do any listening tests after each ceramic/C0G substitution. I did do a listening test after replacing just the electrolytic capacitors and found that the sound was better than stock, but the treble was still somewhat harsh. This agrees well with ChrisMarantz's experience (in post #39 above) that just replacing the electrolytic capacitors in the 1090 didn't "tame the treble". The treble harshness was eliminated with the replacement of the signal path ceramic capacitors with C0G types. This is also what hirscwi reported in his 1090 thread (http://www.audiokarma.org/forums/showpost.php?p=7726785&postcount=18).
 
Very nice info, especially coming from/concuring with Chris and yourself this seems like a very good road to take especially if you have one of the units that may be prone to hi end harshness.
 
I spent a good few hours listening to this integrated. I find the newer marantz stuff sterile, lifeless and almost lacking in the marantz vintage sound. This unit was all but that. I listened to the 1090 connected to my Quartets. Klipsch speakers are very revealing if you didn't already know. Ben was the pioneer at the 1060 BOM, those people that have followed that BOM know what a 1060 is and what it sounds like after Ben's list is applied- it's nothing short of breath taking. The 1090 is just that- crisp , clean and anything but fatiguing to listen to. I had a 1090, it didn't sound anything what Ben has produced with this unit- awesome work brother.
