Hi fellow analoggers;

While out and about traipsing (sp? ) about in SE Portland, stopped at the Gdwill As-is and guess whut? under a sleeping bag, and some rolled up foam rubber lay a Harmon Kardon 3 head 2 motor Uniplane transport cassette deck CD-401. It is intact..slight scratches...you know...and a bit heavy for a cassette deck! okay, a lot heavy for a cass deck...i looked it over...tape cal, bias cal, digital output meters with fast or slow response, separate swtiches for metal/chrome. ferry chrome and normal tape bias and EQ....dolby b, C and HX pro...and more... $5.00 ...and i decided it would look better in my home than in that bin...
got it home....demagged it, cleaned the heads and rubber, and tested it out..and it works GRRREAT!!! whoa...once in a while a guy gets lucky... On the top front it says ULTRAWIDEBAND LINEAR PHASE CASSETTE DECK. CD-401 i got lucky.... if ANY one knows something aobut this fine rare machine...PUllease let me know..thanks ..this IS indeed a great site...

Well I'm certain you realize that you got a very good deal. 3 heads, dual capston drive? and all the features you mentioned. HK is somewhat a less then mainstream brand around here, not because of any quality issues, they do have there fans around here, but they just didn't seem to sell in the same quanity or as many years as the big Japanese brands. I never pass up a 3 head deck if functioning from thrift stores. My limit is $30 and presently have a Pioneer CT-F950 and a Sony TC-K71. I'll invest in belts but that's about it, if it craps out or needs hard to find parts I just pull the backup out of the closet and keep my eyes open for another replacement. Some go the complete restoration route, and there is merit in that, but as long as I can contiue to find them at thrifts I'll just roll them in and out as needed :thmbsp:

Congrats blooeyz !!!

The Harmon Kardon CD-401 is an awesome deck to say the least...
I've been listing one on Craigslist for the last month or so with no bites yet... :dunno:

When I repaired stereo cassette decks at Stereolab in Cambridge Mass, We used to get a lot of those. They are superb. When set up correctly they are as good as a top of the line Nakamichi, Tandberg, or Revox. Probably a cut above a Pioneer or Kenwood or the like. They will make a tape that is as good as the cassette format can produce. They were not cheap when new.

h/k Cassette Decks of the 1980s

The 4xx and 3xx Cassette Decks were made for h/k by Nakamichi. That is why these decks are so well regarded. :thmbsp:

The original list price for the CD401 was $749 US in 1982.

The 2006 Orion Bluebook lists the current value of the CD401 as:

Retail
MSRP: $750.00
USED: $125.00
Wholesale
Mint: $72.00
Average: $42.00

Here is a link to the final version in the 4xx series the 491:

The original list price for the CD491 was $825 US in 1983.

h/k CD401 Photo

The styling matches the look of the early 1980s h/k audio gear. :thmbsp:

Be careful with the power switch it is a somewhat weak link with h/k gear of this era. :nono:

Another KK 3 head cassette deck ?
