Official Kef LS50 owners thread

Stands

It made a huge difference to the clarity of the sound. It's sad that no one makes good sturdy speaker stands anymore... You can see the 2 different speaker stands I tried in the background.

ilok:
Skylan and Sound Anchors are good sturdy stands albeit somewhat pricey. Otherwise you're looking at Sanus or used stands…

Skyland refused to make stands higher than 30 inches, already asked. Sound Anchors is out because it's metal.

Why do they need to be higher than 30 inches? Mine are 26.5.

My seating ear level is quite high. I actually wanted more like 35-36 inches, but the concrete block comes in 16 (15 3/4?) inch size.

In large rooms, having the speaker higher sounds better too.

Why not put a concrete slab under your present stands?
or build a wood box filled with sand?
you could bolt the stands to the box and make them impossible to tip

sometimes my pugs get a little excited and start crashing into things or even I start crashing into things
both my kefs have fallen off stands
once onto my Luxman amp......dent

or how about something like this
could be made at any height and sandfilled would be very steady

I found out that there is a line magnetic dealer in my area. I am going to be able to audition these amps. Yay.
I have my heart set on the lm518ia. It is very expensive but I don't mind if it is worth it. So is it worth the price? I read on some threads that all you need is a well built integrated around 300-400 dollars. Or something like the rega brio-r which I was just about to buy before I located this dealer. I could buy the brio-r, rega dac and a rega turntable all for less than the 518. I will be auditioning to hear the difference but I was just looking for some insight on the lm518ia with the kef ls50's.

We doing listening room pics? Here's what I've done. Have absorption panels at the first reflection points, walls and ceiling, except the QRDs on the front wall behind the speakers. This room is a "home office" that was put together to plan a large addition that we have been working on. Pretty much a mancave upstairs, far removed from civilization.

Two diy mid-bass subs, and up in the ceiling above, 4-15"ers for the ULFs:

johnvb, that is one sweet (and intense) set-up. In more than ten years of cruising these sites I have never seen subs in the attack. Cool!

Now thats whats up! Getting that locked up performance thats trying to get out. Congrats man. As you continue to tweak, you should also post over in the "Vibrations and Smearing"thread. (Cutting Edge)

They are called infinite baffle subs. Check out the Cult of the Infinitely Baffled website for more info. If you register, you can access the "My Projects" section. My IB job is back on page 5 right now.

@johnvb - nice space man! Are those QRDs DIY?

The foam diffusers are pre-made from SRL Acoustics (came in 2' x 2' pieces), then I diyed the oak frames to hold and protect them. The stands are old Sound Anchor stands that I used on my MMGs for a while.
