Chronology of Pioneer speakers

Many thanks, Doc, for your quick reply. I was searching AK for some help on repairing my CS 88's (which I bought new after selling my UTAH studio monitor speakers (big mistake - not buying the CS 88's...selling the UTAH's! heehee. My Sansui 7070 has enough power - 200 watts - to have run all 4 and the UTAH's 12 professional mid-range speakers would have been a great addition, methinks). As an answer, I've copied and pasted a reply that I wrote to Tinitus (about the tweeter foam prob. w/ the 88a's):

I came across your thread while searching for info. on my CS-88's and am hoping that you might be able to help me with my pot problem on them. First they became scratchy, now they are playing/plain dead. They've been with me since the late 60's, first in Michigan, then, for the last 23 years, in Arizona (which is where they went bad). Needlass to say, I am attached to them and they sound(ed) great with my old Sansui 7070 receiver. I need to replace them, but don't know where to look or what to look for, exactly. I do know what they look like and could send pics. Or if that isn't possible, what product would you recommend that might clean them up somehow? At least they don't have the foam tweeter surrounds... Plus my receiver needs some illumination bulb replacements and a good cleaning/tune-up(?). Any advice would be most welcome!
I'm good with my hands ;~) , but electronically uneducated.

Also, Doc, can you tell me what the difference's are between the 88's and the 88a's - just curious?

PS: My comment to you about being some kind of genius was just showing my appreciation for the idea you had in compliling those lists from your cataloges - very good thinking!

PPS: I'd also like to buy a decent inexpensive turntable, just to use to put my crates of albums (all almost in pristine condition) onto my computer, so that I can take CD's of them when I leave Bush-country. I'm determined to live as an ex-pat again and have to take my music with me. Any suggestions? I picked up an old Pioneer PL200 for $8, but it came without the head casing, cartridge and stylus and I'm really lost when it comes to finding any which would work with it. I also need a tape deck for the same recording reason and don't know what I should even be looking for. What can I say...at least I know what kind of music I like.
BTW - Dire Straits (Mark Knopfler) just recently released a recording of "Brothers In Arms" - the music that put CD's on the map - that plays in Dolby 5.1 and 7.1 surround sound. Hopefully, Pink Floyd will follow suit. It won't make ME love analog any less. :~)

Hey Lynn,
Welcome to AK from another Michigander. I have both the CS-88A's and recentley added a pair of 88's. I had pot problems too, and thought it would be no big deal to just spray some De-Oxit into the pots, common problem on old gear. The problem is those pots are sealed. I ended up drilling a small hole into the pot just into the plastic (black) portion of the pot that mates with the metal part, and squirted and turned over and over. It's a bit tricky, as I thought I ruinded one of them my mis drilling. Make sure you turn the "fingers or wipers" as far as possible away from your drill spot if you're going to attempt it. FWIW. I prefer the 88's of the "A" models. You would need to dissasemble from the rear to get at the pots. Also check for brittle, broken wires, and solder joints. I found those inside as well.
