Got a Pioneer SX-xx80 receiver in a few days ago, and as it turns out, nearly every component on the regulator board was smoked. Before I had everything fixed, I couldn't help but wonder what would cause so many problems at once.

Taking a look at the rear of the unit, this one has a round voltage selector plug...the type with the fuse holder in the center. I pulled it out, and I see that Pioneer has a setting for both 110V and 120V. This was set to 110V.

If you happen to have a unit by any manufacturer that has a setting for both 110V and 120V, make sure it is set for 120V if you are in the US or Canada. The overvoltage from setting it to 110V will slowly fry a myriad of components.

This is courtesy of a stereo shop in the Bay area that I hope has since gone out of biz.(love those cheezy stickers some places throw on the back of gear...as if they are proud of their shoddy work or something...)

I appreciate that info very much, I just looked on the back of my 828 and sure enough, set to 110! For a few minutes I tried to turn the thing, then I realized it was a plug and I simply pulled it out and rotated it around to 120. You may have helped increase the life of this beautiful receiver, thank you!!!
 
I checked my Pioneer RG-2, and it was set correctly. It is far too easy to change, as it simply turns, with a slot for a screwdriver blade. I was looking at images on the web to see how its selector looked compared to the Pioneer receivers, and found an image of a RG-2 for sale at Oak Tree Enterprises with the selector set to 110V -- Foe

Actually, I'd say this is good advice, period.
In Europe we have the same problem, when it's 220 and 240. In the interest of compatibility between the UK (used to be 240V) and the rest of the continent (used to be 220), we now have 230V AC. If the component has a 240V setting, it's a wise idea to use that instead of 220. For an amp it will loose a fraction of it's maximum power output, but it will last a lot longer...
 
None of my current Pioneer gear has the voltage selector. My first Spec1 did, and it arrived with a blown line fuse..set to 110v. I changed fuse and selector and had no more problem. My *current* Spec1 is a USA only model I believe..and has no voltage selector. I feel it's in good hands at the moment :)

I also had a PL-570X tt that had a voltage selector. Set to 120 when it arrived..no problems for me at all, and now passed on to another AK'er who seems to loving it just fine.

Guess I should have mentioned that these are plugs, not switches. Remove the fuse in the center (after unplugging it!!) and pull the thing out. Rotate and reinstall so that it is set to 120V, and you're good to go.
 
On the RG-2, its a rotary switch that easily turns with a slotted screwdriver, different than the receivers -- Foe

Back on subject, when it is a switch, how paranoid should I be about it getting changed to the wrong setting, and should I do something (like tape over the switch) to keep it from being changed? The back of the stereo rack is open, and the three-going-on-four-year-old can get behind it. Hmm, the bottom section of the rack (originally intended for vinyl storage) has a back, I can put it down there and stack something on top of it; the RG-2 is rather solid (after I installed some "new" rubber feet) and it has no vent holes for heat -- Foe
 
I wouldn't think it would be the kind of thing a kid would get into...also didn't mean to make you paranoid about it. If it takes a screwdriver to turn it, it sounds unlikely.

You could fill in the screwdriver slot with a dab of silicone seal, which can be easily removed if necessary.......

I'm trying to double check the voltage setting on my 838 but I don't see any 110 or 120 volt numbers. I think this one is missing a sticker or something that goes around the plug where the fuse is that would have the numbers on it. Can somebody help me out regarding this?

You sure???

On my 838, the 110V position is at 8 o'clock, and the 120V position is at 10-o'clock.

EW--I guess I'm going to have to take another look. The only thing I saw yesterday when I looked at it is "4A" on the very top of the plug where the fuse is located. Are you actually seeing 110V /120V somewhere on or near the plug? I have a feeling maybe I overlooked something or something's missing. You don't by chance have a picture of yours do you? Thanks again!
 
Does your's HAVE a multivoltage plug at all? Not all do. If it does, the plug itself, a circle about 1 1/8" diameter, has a cutout on it to allow the selected voltage to display when inserted...the available voltages are displayed in a ring around the plug itself...all but the selected voltage are covered by the plug when it is in place.

No camera...
 
I guess this one doesn't have selectable voltage then. I just thought if one 838 has it then all 838's do too? If that's not the case, does that make any sense to you? Does yours take a 4 amp fuse? Thanks for all the help EW!
