AK has made it! Dig the several mentions in his description. $225 is probably a good price. I may take a snipe at it, I'll be watching.

Seller has 100% positive feedback. We'll see. Oregon to Nebraska shouldn't be to bad a trip.
I already have an excellent C-80 and several other preamps. Probably put it with the Yamaha M-80.

There are so many things I could say about this preamp Bully but I'll be interested to hear what you have to say about it.I feel that the Kenwood 700C has the marked advantage of being superior overall to the C2x,however the C2x phono stage is excellent.
Tell me if you try to take the output of the phono stage to another amp via the tape-outs.I just want confirmation that what I hear isn't just in my imagination. :sigh: :D

Jep, a good bargain. A C-2 just sold for 231€ (275 US$) on German eBay.

PS. A CX-1000, was just sold for 560.55€ (668 US$), An M-85 vent for 638,33€ (761 US$). If you have Yamaha gear to sell, the German eBay is the place to go. It is crazy!
 
Yeah, I checked the old threads here, checked completed auctions (no other C2x's) and the Yamahas were going for good prices.
If it is really better than the C-80, I've got a bargain.

Maybe 1 or 2 C2x's come up a year - last one I remember went for much more than $225. I guess I should have PM'd B2 first?

How would those of you who've heard all or most of the TOTL C-series preamps rank them? Did the audio quality peak with the C2X or did the Yamaha preamps actually improve into the 1980s and/or beyond?

I just bought the other one. Take a nice little senic ride to UMass this weekend and pick it up. It will be interesting to hear how it stacks up to the M-40's trim pots as the volume control. Can't get much purer than that. We'll see...
Gonna have to get some new bearings for my Sumiko LMT now. The KD500 has been idle too long.
 
I have the Yamaha C-80, and it is an excellent preamp. 1984-85, and retailed for $750. According to Orion, the C-2x was from1985, and had an msrp of $1300. If it is that much better than the C-80 (which is still, today, an excellent preamp ready to battle the better new units) I have scored a great bargain. I even had two C-80s, but sold one (probably let it go too cheap a couple of years ago). My remaining C-80 is near-mint only because it hasn't just come out of the box (which I have, too). The C-2x, from the description, carries some war wounds. Heck, it's black so who'll see them? Not that I get any visitors anyway.
I'll probably take the Kenwood Basic C2 (also with an exceptional phono section!) out and run the C-2x with the big Soundcraftsmen amp, and the Technics SL-1400Mk2/Ortofon MC10.
Guy said he'd ship today. How long from Oregon to Nebraska???? Too long.

I've got the C-2/C-85/C-65/CX-1000/CX-1 and think the C-85 was probably the top of this group. Only reason I run the CX-1 is that it is remote capable and I listen while working and is so much simpler than bobbing up and down everytime the phone rings, wife calls, etc. Will be upgrading the op-amps/caps and then compare again.

Charlie K - are saying that there were two C-2x preamps on eBay?
 
I had the c4 and the cx800 as my pre-amps for a while. The c4 got sold and the 800 sits on the shelf waiting to find someone that loves it more than I did. I really did like the remote capability of the 800 but the sound of those 2 yamahas left me less than thrilled. Not real bad sounding units it's just they seemed lifeless and a little to bright to me. Maybe with the right room and the right speakers who knows. Hopefully you'll have different luck with your yamahas.

I do not agree fully with you B-2, I have the C-60 (1984), C-85 (1986) and the CX-1000 (1988). I believe the CX-1000 is better than the C-85; the design line is also different. The C-85 is the top of the old C- series; the CX-1000 is a “down grade” or “retail version” of the CX-10000 (1987). But I do agree with you that the C-85 is a really great Pre. Especially the EQ I like.

The pries range was:
C-80 740, - US$ (1984)
C-85 840, - US$
CX-1000 1.200, - US$
CX-1 1.200, - US$ (1993)

But how the C-2x fits in I am not sure, the pries indicates that it fits in with the CX-1000 and CX-1. But the sound I don’t know, I guess that somebody has to sell one to B-2 (or to me… shhhh..). And he will let us know :D

A small note, there is 2 versions of the C-65. The C-65 and the 65B, the first is from 1984 the other 1986. The B version has Golden inputs and costs about the double of the “normal” 65.

And last, B-2 there is nothing like the laziness of a remote control. Mine can control the CD, the tuner and to some extend the input for my television (it can also control the TT, but my PX-3 can not). :smoke:
