another pair of foundlings I've been meaning to post photos of... these are Scott S-15 three-ways (sealed boxes). Drivers appear to be CTS's and look quite pedestrian. Amazingly, though, these are quite nice sounding little (12" x 24" x 9) speakers. They're dated 1974 on a stamp on the grill frame. Not too shabby... try a pair if you stumble across 'em cheap (or free!).

The first real hi fi speakers I bought were AR4x's in 1971 at Musicraft in Chicago. About a year later I wanted to upgrade and I bought a pair of Scott S-10's (ten inch woofer!).

They were fantastic speakers and I was sorry when I sold them (I bought Advents).

I've always wanted to hear them again, but in twenty years of buying used gear I've never seen another pair.

S-15's must have been the next bigger speaker in their lineup. If they sound like the S-10's I bet they sound good!

under rated vintage loudspeakers...

Here is a pic of my 1973 HH Scott S-101's. I bought these used from a good friend in 1982'ish. They have been my favorite loudspeaker ever since.

These are 10-way units with 2 10" CTS alnico and four mids and four tweets in each cabinet.

There is next to nothing on the web as far as info on vintage Scott speakers. I took mine apart and cross referenced the driver manufacturing numbers to find the information about the drivers. There was a manufacturing date stamped on the back of the grill cloth frames that told me when they were made.

I still find these speakers very pleasing to listen to. Congrats on your find. There is another set of unique Scott speakers in a thread somewhere. I think they were Pro-100's or something. Very nice units too.

Wow, I cannot believe your post. Complete with photo.

Yes, these are very fine sounding speakers. Splendid is more like it.

However, there is now a problem with one of mine: the mids and trebles are gone. But it is still beautiful on the lows.
How did you get the grill off? Is the way "inside" through the woofer?

What a surprise!
I am so glad you contacted me. You are the first other person I have ever known of owning the S-101. I have looked for detailed information for years with no luck. This is a beginning.

It sounds like you may have lost part of your crossover with the dead mids and tweets. You can gain access by gently prying the covers from the top or the bottom. A butter knife from the top works best for me. The butter knife doesn't scratch and if it does the small scratch is hidden up under the top molding.

Take the butter knife and gently place it inbetween the top of the grill and the wood. Pry the grill outward so it has a bow in it (it will curve outward). As the grill curves outward you will see it is mounted in slots on both sides from top to bottom. You bend it out just enough to release it from the cabinet. Walla, speakers everywhere!

Try not to touch the surrounds on the woofers. They should be rubber coated cloth surrounds. But after so many years they get VERY tacky. Everything from cat hair to saw dust will stick to them.

I accessed the guts by removing the woofers. Be WARNED, mine had real fiberglass as the batting material. You can pull it out to see the crossovers, but it is nasty to work with. When I put mine back together I put it back just where I found it as not to mess with the original design. I'm sure somebody figured out how much and where to get the best sound.

If you do a search on my posts you can see the speaker taken apart. I posted pics a long time ago.

found a pair of these at the good will for $1 they are dated 1968 and acording to a review in stereo review came packaged wit a Scott compact system. The tweeter looks the same but the woofer is maybe 6" sounds great too.
 
Sensitivity?

I also have a pair of S-15's and I am hoping they will work OK with the Sonic Impact class-T amp (6 watt/channel) I have on order. Does anyone know the sensitivity of those CTS drivers?
 
They're sealed boxes, so don't expect too much, but a PP EL84 amp (ca. 10 to 12 watts per channel) drives the S-15's I have quite respectably.
 
Scott Speakers

I know I'm more than a bit late on this discussion; but I'd like to add my two cents. I still have a pair of Scott S-11's, which I purchased in 1967 while in Germany at the Bitburg Audio Club. They still have a mellow sound; but are nowhere near what I remember the AR3s sounded like.
How's that for longevity? :hdphones:

I may be a disfunctional audiophile, but I still like my Scotts. Almost 30 years with me they still make me happy even though they have been in the garage for several years (too big for my small living room).

Thanks for the memories - I think about AK every now and then. It's good to see the web site still up and running after all these years.

as the thread is alive again, I am contributing :)
I purchased 2 months ago a pair of Scott 186-B, I like them a lot, and here is what I can say :
3-way design, 1 10" woofer, a mid and a dome-tweeter.
Don't know how the cross-over is made, but there are two switches that allow fine tuning of the mid and the tweeter, 3 positions for each : neutral, -3dB, -6dB.
And believe me, that works and is very useful according to the room and the type of music I listen to.

My feeling about them :
Very well built, heavy, solid, beautiful but sober vintage look.
Mellow sound, correct tonal balance, good versatility (I listen to metal, electro, old rock, pop, reggae, instrumental and everything sounds fine).

Of course, I don't say they are incredible but we are very far from cheap plastic crap and if you can get a pair for $50, it's a good deal. I use them as my main and only switch to my small beloved Axiom m3Ti for hard-rock listening as those have a slight lack of medium (2-way with no crossover, fantastic built and sound) which suits perfectly that kind of music.

I'll chime in with some new to me Scott's I found at SA last week. I needed new speaker s for the garage and the $9 price was right.
They felt solid, heavy, and seemed like a good risk. The reward was quite pleasant. Perfect for my needs!
Bigger Scotts seem to be just as nice eh.
 
As I read this I am listening to a pair of S-10's I found at GW for $18. I have recapped them and I think they sound great.

They seem to compare spec. wise with Dynaco A25 & KLH 17.
A25 20x11.5x10" 24lbs. SPL 82. 1.5" tweeter 10" woofer rated 20-60w.
KLH 17 24x12x9" 25lbs. SPL 88. 4" tweeter 10" woofer rated 12-60w.
S10 23.5x11.75x8" 23.5lbs. SPL ? 3.5" tweeter 10" woofer rated 7-50w.

Would love to find a pair of KLH 17's & A25's to compare!
 
Wow.... I also have a pair of S-101's (my girlfriends favorite) and a pair of PRO 70's. The old Scott's do sound "nice", and yes there is not alot of info on them, the higher end Scotts will hold their own against Dynacos (I have A-25's and A-25XL's) but I like my Klipsch and ESS a little more.
