Barzilay E-Waves

Finally completed my Barzilay cabinet E-Waves. These are the bigger brothers of my previous project #12 (LE10A woofers in 1.5 cu. ft. cab). Beautiful Barzilay cabinets in walnut at about 3.5 cu. ft. net. I'm using the B&C DE250 compression driver with Zilch's reference crossover and LE14A woofers. Cabinets tuned to 32 Hz.

It's too early to post performance comments as I just finished them today. I must say that vocals sound supreme with the DE250 drivers. Bass sounds wonderful.

Still need to make some grill covers as I decided not to use the original lattice type grills that came with the cabinet. I'll try the Home Depot screen frames.

I jus twent back and looked at your previous pair. I didn't recall that you used LE10A woofers. I just refoamed a pair today & I've been fooling with the box modeling programs to see what they'll work in. What's your take on the bass performance of the LE10A in those 1.5 cu ft sealed cabs?

BTW, the Barzilay cabs look stupendous. I love great woodwork. Nice job.
 
Wharfdale W60D to E-Wave Advent

Some time ago I found a pair of Wharfdale W60Ds at the local Goodwill. The cabinets needed some work.

At the same time I was building my E-Wave NLAs. I noticed how the Advent woofer would work just fine in that nice Wharfdale cabinet.

This weekend I finally decided to start work on that project. I had refinished the cabinets over the winter, so yesterday I got out the jig saw and cut some wood away from the midrange and tweeter area of the W60Ds. The waveguide fit in just fine.

I sanded down the front baffle board a bit to remove the residue from the velcro fasteners. I painted it this morning.

I mounted in a pair of refoamed metal frame Advent woofers.

I applied rope caulk to the waveguide and the woofer basket to dampen any resonances.

Later this coming week, I'll install new binding posts and the crossover from my NLA E-Waves. I will be building new crossovers for the Advents to use the B&C DE250 driver.

These cabinets will be going to Missouri for my daughter to use at University.

Thanks for the compliments. Howards Restore a finish and wax brought the veneer back to life. The cabinets are very impressive.

I ended up porting the LE10A's. I tuned to 35 Hz. That was a huge improvement. Great bass out of those. WinISD says they would be much better in a bigger box but, they really rock in a small box.

I closely follow your teachings sensei.

I also used a cross brace to stiffen the cabinet and sealed all the joints inside. I used foam sealing tape for the screw on back panel. The results are worth the extra effort.
 
How well will the D220 perform when surface mounted to a wall about 11' high, so the listening angle is about a 40 degree angle?

Eh... that's probably outside the optimal vertical dispersion zone for the horn flare.

I'd be inclined (haha, get it? :D ) to angle them down at least around 20 degrees...

I also used a pair of LE10A's in 1.5 cu ft cabs tuned to just under 40hz, they
work Surprisingly well in the config, I wanted bigger cab but that's what I had.
(they sound very very nice).:music: (mine are ported as well)

They seem pretty versatile, just don't kill um with bunch of power if u go bigger.
 
Are PC crossover boards for the Econwave available

Hey folks.

Getting ready to start my econowave project with a pair of Mach 1 cabinets. Are any of the Zilchlab/Jacklab pc boards available? Otherwise, any adivce on building the crossvoer? Haven't done that part before. Thanks, Larry
 
More parts on the way for small waveguide combos

Today I ordered a pair each of B&C DE10 drivers and ME10 waveguides. I have crossover parts on hand to experiment with these. Cost: about $115.

I also ordered the parts to make clones of the JBL AC15 crossovers for the 2414 drivers and JBL 6" 90 X 90 waveguides that I have on hand.

The purpose is to find some good combos to go into 3-ways. This will be a long process I'm sure. Details as they develop.

The Altec Boleros with the 'classic' Econowave D220Ti/PH612 on top are still making me happy but I hope to be able to develop my next finished speaker with parts that actually all fit inside the box.

I'm curious about this. Tried searching the forum for "home depot screen" but got hits on anything containing the word home OR depot OR screen.
Is this discussed somewhere?

Dayton 10" Classic vs PE no-name 10"

They seem to be a definite improvement over the EPI woofers. I did install the inductor and cap and test the EPI woofer, but had very little improvement. In defense of the EPIs, they measure 4 ohm on the woofer vs the daytons 8 (re is 6.7 according to parts for less), so I probably didn't have the crossover dialed in right.

Described as "A perfect replacement woofer for classic hi-fi loudspeakers! The oversized decorative squared-off frame accommodates a wide variety of OEM driver cutouts." Might be a good fit if my Criterion woofers are disappointing. They (Criterion) are 11" with mounting "ears" and would be a challenge to replace unless I make some sort of adapter for the 10" Classic woofer. The square frame OTOH would fit, but is this $20 woofer any good? :scratch2:

Not sure where I've read about it but I've seen several references to it on AK.

Home Depot sells all the components to make your own window screens. They sell the side pieces in 7 ft. lengths and molded corners. You cut the sides to length and they snap into the corners, forming your frame. Use your own grill cloth and wrap it around the frame. There is a round rubber rope that gets pushed into a channel on the frame with a special tool that secures the cloth. You could attach it to the cabinet with Velcro.

I have not tried it yet but, it looks simple enough. The hardest part is probably getting a good tight stretch on the cloth without buckling the frame.

It would only cost $40 plus freight to find out. Or, you could cut your risk, and try just one. The spec's read OK, and I have found some Goldwood cheapies that did a great job. Heck, go for it, and let us know how they do.

hahah "inclined" :)

20 degrees might be doable. I wonder if I wouldn't be better off just buying real wall mount speakers then for better imaging & sound?
 
I used the P.E. grille frames. They're rather thick but go together well. I stumbled on a great fabric at the local Jo Ann Fabrics. It's a stretch swim/dance outfit fabric that's like Lycra. It stretches forever & never wrinkles. I attached it with double sided foam tape. It's very thin & has no visible 'grain' to it. As close to acoustically transparent as anything I've heard. Better than the conventional Poly Jersey 'grille cloth' they sell. Something like $6/yard.
