I have been fortunate enough to fashion a pair of DIY (sort of) speakers that hit on all cylinders, at least to my ears. What we have here is a pair of vintage Coral 12 TET factory cabinets fitted with Eminence Delta 12 drivers(thanks Paul C.), Altec 811b/806a horn & drivers combo & a pair of Eminence PXB2-800/800 Hz 2-Way Crossovers. I'm not sure what you could compare them to, but the are fantastic with very robust low end and the outstanding performance of the Altec horn & driver combo. This was about as easy of a project as one could hope, the boxes were already tuned to match a 12" driver with a port at or near the bottom of the baffle. All I did was mount the Eminence drivers and crossovers, mount the horns and solder everything together. The last improvement was to refit the back baffle with new, slightly bigger wood screws so as to reinforce and strengthen the cabinets. These things absolutely crush any speaker I have ever owned and sound as good as anything that I have heard, be-it Altec, Klipsch, whatever. Like I said this was a simple project, I based the whole theory on using high quality, proven pieces too make a simple, high performance speaker set. Paired up with a tube amp, tube pre/high quality phono stage and the right turntable/cartridge this is one great sounding set up....

- I do see one design flaw, i bet you have to stand up to get in the sweet spot.
 
Great looking stuff. Do you buy the amp off of ebay seller kqvkq9? I have been trying to snag one of his creations for several months and his prices keep going up. Anyway, great looking stuff!!:thmbsp:

Hi Kelly from that angle it looks that way but....when I say that I mounted the horns, it is a "non destructive" mounting. (see the pic.) These cabinets are way too vintage and nice for me to want to do any cutting or drilling on. So, as you see I simply set them on top with some isolation/dampening pieces and angled the horn slightly downward so as to try to correct the potential sweet spot discrepancy. You can also get an idea of the size of these cabinets, outside dimensions run 40x20x20. I wanted a big set of boxes and I have them now....:yes:

That is one of his amps. Great amp, 60wpc, runs a quad of 6550's.:banana:

The Amber is for the phono stage only and ran through the Bottlehead. I tried several of the budget phono boxes and wasn't happy with either. I picked up the Amber for way less than what you pay for a decent phono stage and will probably out-preform most of the sub $800-$1000 units......IMO
 
Very sweet looking setup Bill! I like the look of those cabinets!

I think it's time for a get together at your place, check out your gear... maybe eat some Italian sausage...

Hi Eric, I really made some changes in the system this year. I think a get together would be great. Thanks for the kudos on the speakers, now what will I do with those Coral triaxials:scratch2:

Refresh my memory: What were you running under the horns the last time we got together? That was a great sounding set-up already to my ear, I don't think I can stand it if it's better :D .

That was when I set the horns on top of the Technics SB 700.....
