Don't tell MiMi that you can't do it:)
Got a pair of DSS-9's at a TS for $5.00 a bit back. The woofers were gone. Ws told that you could not get ;em reconed as the cone material was no longe available / made... Used the "shot gun" approach and sent out e-mails to as many speaker shops as I could find address for.... Same responce... No can do... UNTILL A RESPONCE FROM SIMPLY SPEAKERS...

Yea we can fix 'em... We got a few cones lrft.... After these are gone there aint no more.... It will cost ya' $75.00 and shipping.... So I took 'em out and sent 'em.... Pic to follow.....
This is what they looked like when I bought the speakers for $5.00...

I wish I knew you were looking for cones OMI, I have Simply Speakers in my favorites folder cause they do have a great selection. So let us know how it turns out already.

Looks good as new... New cone material same as factory.... Lets put 'em back in...

Fantastic re-cone job OMI. I can't believe you got those speakers for $5 though...must have been from the back of a truck:D :D

I bet you don't have more than $40 invested in them and they look brand new. But how do they sound?

Lets try 'em out now....

Crisp and clear highs and mid... Jack up the lows and you dont so much hear them, but you feel the lows in vibrate body...

Hook 'em up to the Pioneer SX-9...

I played one of my TS finds, an LP of contemporary guitar, and if you closed your eyes you would swear the guy was sitting in front of you playing...

Figure I got a little less that $200.00 into the pair and it looks like it is $$$ well spent...

The pots for mids and highs adjustment work like a champ. All in all it looks like I have ended up a verry nice set of speakers...

Got 'em at a SA. They were from the guy that runs / helps out at the place. I guess he had cked out having them re-coned and was told the same... I would bet that Simply Speakers is the ONLY place in the US that still has some cones... Like I said every other shop came back with the same story.... Dont make the cone material any more... No can do.... No way Jose... Dont remember how many cones they said they had left... 12 - 15 ... But they were quite adament that once they were gone that was it for this type speaker..... It was $75.00 per speaker to have 'em completly re-coned plus shipping... Or a total of $168.00 for both. Took a month to get 'em back once they had 'em. They must have a lot of work... I was starting to worry...

I was thinking you did the re-coning. I take back my praise:D No really, even for $190 and change you have a great set there.

Enjoy them with those great jazz LP's you scored the other day.

WOW!!

Nice save!! The speaks look as good as new.

Those guys really did a nice job.

Regards

yeppers... I think it is the graphite poly cone or poly graphite... That is why EVERYONE said you could not get them redone.. also duel voice coils (what ever that means)...

FYI Found the E-mail I got from the speaker company...

Hello,

The only "brittle" cone models we have parts for are the 12" models used in the HPM-900 Pioneer, and a few others. If your models are the 12" version, and the cones have cracked, split, etc, we CAN recone them for $75 each.

Please give us a call or e-mail if you need more information.

We will be happy to help you.

Regards,

Sean Ryan, Tom Ryan, and the crew at Simply Speakers

The cone material is called a "graphite modulus" fiber. At least, that what it is called with my HPM-900.
I wasn't familiar with the DSS-9, but doggone, when I saw the frame on that woofer, YEEE-HAH didn't I think it would be a special speaker.
Been having computer problems, hope the OS is here to stay.
