Best enclosure type for two EVM-15L?

The speakers discussed below are being used for live sound reinforcement and band rehearsal.

I have two 16-ohm EVM-15L drivers. They are currently in a homebuilt folded horn box I bought secondhand. It was built to the old EV Eliminator w-bin plans. The box is deteriorating from transport. If I have to build a new box, it isn't set in stone that the box will be the same type. Especially since this one wasn't originally designed for two drivers. I installed them face-to-face isobaric FWIW because the power amp I'm using with them wants to see an 8 ohm load in bridge mode and I didn't have two boxes. In this config it's mighty loud but it's visibly and audibly taking the box apart.

What type of enclusure would be best for these? Sealed? Ported? The same type horn? A different type horn? I'm driving them with a CS800. I haven't yet settled on the best crossover frequency. The mains are current model EV Eliminators (rated 50-20KHz) which are nothing like the old homebrew.

Have Bassmaxx build some horns for you using these drivers if you really like them. Real horns that make real bass and Johan can design to order.
Wardsweb bought a pair for his home theater which I feel is a bit of overkill. It would only take one to severially damage a brick home.
Probably easier to move too.
 
My brother used to have these woofers back when he played bass. He had one of the in a sealed bass enclosure and one in a W type horn...he much prefered the horn back when he was playin'.

What do you want these woofers to do?...what other drivers will they be matched up with? what do you have in mind for a cross-over point?


If your going for an audio system...They'd work out great as a midbass horn.
 
The intention is to use the speakers as a sub for my band's sound system. If this type driver is not suited for that, please inform me. They are test pieces I got from an EV employee so I don't have specs.

I guess I could take them into the lab at work on the weekend and trace the impedance curve with and without added wieghts to get their characteristics if it came right down to it. Only did that once before, but it was not difficult.

I haven't yet settled on the crossover frequency between the box I'll build and the mains. The mains are good to 50 Hz but I may set it higher to compensate for thefact that I have a lower-wattage power amp that is driving the mains. 800 watts mono bridged for the sub, 160 wpc stereo at 8 ohms to mains (Yamaha P1600).

OTOH I could bridge the Yamaha to drive the bass and use the Peavey to run the mains for more balance, especially if the bass box ends up with greater sensitivity than the mains (hypothetically- I don't know if this will be likely)

The EVM 15B was considered the more versatile model
which you could use them in a horn, or a reflex box.

Are the boxes damaged to the point that they cannot

I looked up the TL4025 and TL4050. They look like a pair that a friend of mine rented for an outdoor biker club party we played with him. They were gigundous. If they are the same, those are mighty big to haul around.

One of the plans lists that it is for the EVM-15L. That is model TL606. I can't find any picture of this model on the web. Anybody familiar with it? What configuration is it? Are they likewise huge?
 
hmm i just repaired one of these and was gona use it for bass, thanks for the thiele parameters people, you've come through without even me asking! any good simple plants for a folded W box?
 
Actually I do have plans for the Eliminator W-bin. I was just curious about these other designs since the TL606 has EVM-15L listed right on its front page. The seller repiled with pictures of the finished cabs. They are slot-ported. Looks like a relatively compact package but ported cabs do unload the cone when the frequency gets too low. What do you think?

i have a pr of these original eliminators and if you wouldnt mind could you scan and email me a copy of the plans with the spec sheet.id appreciate it very much.
im not using them at the moment as when i got them the 4 t35's were removed and i have yet to replace them.you guys are right though they are huge cabinets and definately not too portable .

yes yes, myself also, i figure i might as well try it with the other 15" pro woofer that came in that bass cab (and EV sro-15) because they sound pretty similar, if you can please send them along!
 
Actually, the SRO is the EVM15-B, IIRC. It's possible to recone either one of those drivers to be the exact same thing as the other, as they use then exact same basket and magnet motor assembly.

I agree with the suggestion for the W-horn. Good way to maximize the low-end output from those. Not too long of a voice coil winding (compared to monsters like the CV 189-series and such), but very efficient and effective in a horn (where excursion doesn't matter as much).

Don't worry about it. EV painted those things like 3 or 4 different colors (have seen silver, white and black ones regularly) and used (or didn't use) a "heat sink" aluminum cover on the magnet for different models (the "oem" ones didn't have the cover, but the speakers were the SAME THING functionally otherwise). None of these make ANY difference in the sound. The motor inside the speaker is exactly the same...

Hey WR... post the model numbers of all the cabinets the guy had on the auction. I've got a buddy with EXTENSIVE Electrovoice literature from the early-80s and up... maybe I can snag a copy of the plans (hey, something else to go into the schematics-and-such forum, huh? Speaker plans!)...

TL 505. TL 606, TL 806. He has more copies for sale but I'll pass. I asked him what crossover points he used with them and he says the tech sheet says the 606 has response down to 70 Hz, 50 Hz port adjusted (?). My mains already go down to 50 Hz.

Hmm. Am I right back around to the Eliminator W-box? I guess unless I bite the bullet on the size of the 4025 or 4050, or else go with a simple sealed enclosure, that is where I am.
