My first refinishing project

It was the first time I've refinished a wood case. The victim was a case from a Sansui 3000a I am restoring. Chassis is done minus a volume pot and I just got new knobs and a mint faceplate.

The case was badly scared and had some water stains as well. The color (whatever it was) was near gone.

Pics of it are completely sanded down, stained, and after finishing with the urathane coat. I'm surprised at how much gloss semi-gloss has. I am fond of darker woods and used a nice red mahognay stain.

Anyways, Just want some input on how it looks. Go easy ! it's my first time at this

Looking good! I love cleaning up something gross, and making it nice again. What a cool feeling!

I got a mini version of your satisfaction tonight, gave the initial tung oil treatment to a few tired faded cases.

Nice wood looks great, but crappy wood made to look nice is even better.

Make sure you give us some fully assembled shots when its all done. :)

Looks darn good to me as well. I like the less glossy look of oil, but that 3000 will really shine in it's new cabinet.

My nex project will probably be re-veneering a cabinet. A 7070 I recently purchased has vinyl covering, which is in fine shape, I just like the vaneer look better...
 
looks great......ive used that color on a lot of my projects...... if you do 3 or 4 coats and sand well in between, you can get it to really shine!

Thankfully no. I hit it with some 100 grit to even it out, than 250 for smoothness. i then applied the stain, waited 20 mins and wiped it off

I then applied the first coat or urathane, waited 8 hours, sanded with 340 grit, then added a second coat. after 12 hours of drying, its lookin cherry.

A quick fyi about semi-gloss poly or other semi-gloss finishes...

These are full high-gloss finishes with an extremely fine powder, similar to talc, mixed in to cut the gloss. Semi gloss finishes MUST be carefully and slowly stirred prior to use. Do not shake, and do not stir vigorously, because this will add air bubbles to the can, and that's going to be a problem. If you don't mix, then the powder will settle to the bottom of the can, and you will get a finish that is more glossy than it should be.

Learned my lesson on a garage door. Had to do the *(&@#$%^&* over.
 
Nice -- I'd love to see it when you get the 3000a put back inside.

There's nothing quite as gratifying as refinishing an old case - big difference!

The stain was Minwax WoodFinish Red Mahogany 225. You can get it at just about any hardware place.

The semi-gloss coat was Minwax Helmsman Semi-Gloss Spar Urethane. Protects against moisture and sun damage.

I think it was around 12 bucks for 1qt of stain and another of the urethane.
 
On my recently built luan shelves, I used two coats of Minwax Sedona Red Wood Finish. At that point, my daughters asked "Why pink shelves Daddy?"

I then did two applications of Watco Fruitwood Danish Oil (a brownish tint) which improved it greatly to a reddish brown - much more mahogany looking.

Miniwax and Watco did a decent job. Next project will be real Hondurean Mahogany wood and Minwax Red Mahogany wood finish like you used with neutral Danish Oil.

Were you as nervous about taking that first step as I was? It took me months to get up the courage to do my first veneer job. So glad I did it though. It gave me a new found confidence. I'm looking forward to my next one now.

Looks great on the stain and the finish. I am up to refinishing my 3000a case. Does your case have the wood foot running around the bottom of the case? If so, can you take some dimensions so I can rebuild the one missing on my case. I may try that mahogony stain on mine. I might try spray painting the interior or staining the interior black prior to refinishing the esterior. Thank you if you can get those dimensions and angle of slant on it. Where do I send my 3000a for overhall?:) I only have to change the power light on mine, as far as lights go.
