I am located in Knoxville also. I am going to see if I can get it. This stinks, I thought I was not going to buy anymore after just buying that CR 3020.

I found this auction before it was listed here, right after that first bidder blew the BIN price. Somehow it got pointed out over on stevehoffman.tv forums where I spend lotsa time. I ended up over here and have really enjoyed the discussion.

Anyways, I realize I overpaid by a few hundred bucks... feel free to toss the jabs over my way! :twak: Still, I'm looking forward to this piece. I was 15 when it came out, it was the true 'holy grail' of audio products when I was a kid. A lot of you guys enjoy the "classic" era stuff from the 1970s, but this '80s period is the one I have the fondest memories of. Can't wait to hook it up, and maybe rock out to some Guns N Roses :D

Yes, that was me. That is alright. I did not want to pay more than $700. I was going to go higher, but I just purchased an FN PS90 yesterday for $1700. Enjoy the unit and tell us how it sounds.

Sorry man. Will do. Looks like I probably won't get it until monday, but I will report back.

If anyone cares(?), although I'm new around here, I'm very serious about audio. My main system is not vintage, but I enjoy it very much. Stereo set-up consists of Sony SCD-1 for CD/SACD, Sony TAP-9000ES for pre-amp, McIntosh MC-402 for amp, and B&W N802s for speakers.

The GX10ES will go in my second system with some NHT speakers.
 
Congrats sam, beautiful receiver there. I had my eye on it but I new it was out of my range. I wouldnt mind rocking out to the illusion albums with that bad boy. Hope you enjoy it.

Thanks! It sure was cool when Sony stuff was actually Made In Japan, and took audio gear seriously with design, quality and looks.
 
Congrats sam. Sure would like to hear Resphighi on it. Your comment reminds that I have to buy some of the Living Stereo Sacd series.
 
You'll want to check the offset and bias on the amp when you receive. Bias many not be adjustable, but the offset will be (do I have that backwards?). And, if a fan of FM, you may wish to have the tuner aligned. I wonder if that is essentially an ST-S730ES tuner in there (Axel?). The ST-S730ES is an excellent and sought after tuner. Well worth getting aligned and hooked up to a decent antenna (I'm a fan of the Radio Shack/Antennacraft 6-element FM-specific yagi for $24 and a run of RG-6 coax). Not sure how much there is to be gained with a recap on a unit as new as the ST-GX10ES....but Black Gates can upgrade the sound of even new units from what I've read. Looking forward to your report.

I appreciate the tips. Although I know my way around the externals of gear, I'm not familiar with how to check for the offset/bias as you describe. If you don't mind relating some instruction, I'm more than happy to go after it with a multimeter.

I'm not a huge FM fan (XM is more my thing), but I do plan on connecting it to my UHF/VHF/FM antenna in the attic.

Read the stickies at the beginning of the Vintage Solid-State Forum. My guess is that you will need to purchase the service manual from one of the several on-line sellers as the GX10ES is so rare that I've never seen it mentioned by an owner on AK. As a result, no one will have the manual to provide you the procedure. These guy are good and list it in both .pdf and paper. http://www.servicemanuals.net/results.aspx?type=SM&brand=160&model=STR-GX10ES

As the man said, "the reports of my death are decidedly premature." Black Gates are alive and well and available from many sources. Make a nice upgrade to the sound in all of my vintage gear.

Ok, so you think the service manual for the GX10ES is a good investment even though no one else around can really help me with bias and offset particulars? I'm more than willing to dig into it, but if it sounds fine, I'll be less likely to start tearing it apart.

Good to know about the Black Gates. I have several in my modded Sony SCD-1, and they produce great results.
