Surround Glue ?

One for the pro's...

Has anybody found a good low cost source for polyacrylic surround glue. I've been trying to figure out where to find a better source then Matelectronic's they charge $7.95 for 1 ounce. Which I think is pretty pricey when doing multiple woofer refoam jobs. :yikes:
Anybody have a better source?
I did a google and haven't found much yet...

It almost seems most anything will work. I use contact cement and occasionally WelBond, other's do fine with Elmer's.

Do a search here on refoam glue and see what comes up.

Hi Andyman

Did a search a couple of times no brands really mentioned or where it could be purchased?!

I was told that Elmer's doesn't stick to metal very well. Sure would be a boat load cheaper. But I'm not sure I'd want to risk all the time it took to refoam on glue I'm not sure about. Have you used it before???? The stuff Matelectronic's sells sure looks like Elmer's though.
Is Welbond a name brand found anywhere? White glue? drying time?

I'm really enjoying refoaming now. On my 5th pair, it's just expensive and a pain in the ass to have to order glue and wait for it, if something off the shelf would do.

I have used CG Electronics Speaker repair Adhesive Service cement.
P/N 10-0302-0000

I believe I got it from MCM for @$10 for 2 ounces.
It goes a long way!!!

Can't compare it to others 'cuz it's all I've used.

I heard on AA about Aileen's Tacky Glue - found in crafts stores, supposedly sticks to anything, dries flexible, and costs about the same as Elmers. I'm gona try it when I get to my EPIs...

I too saw it in the DecWare tutorial and recognized the bottle. Sears Hardware used to carry it here, but don't anymore. I wound up buying some at a local Ace Hardware though.

I couldn't get any glue at MAT, even called before I put my order in for surrounds to make sure I didn't miss it on the site. I was told that they did not handle the glue, just the foam.

The only refoam that I've done that I use is an 8" sub/140 watts. I haven't heard it blow apart yet so must be it's OK.

I used plain old contact cement by DAP/Weldwood. I will find a better brush to get the glue to where I want it than the one that is on the cap. Way too stiff.

The Welbond looks like the ticket. Price is right too!

I have an Ace hardware here, I'll have to see if they carry it, and give it a try.

Contact cement..

You've got to be a bit careful with contact cement around foam. Most common contact cements contain a good bit of acetone which will melt most foams. 3M makes a product called 'General Trim Adhesive' (PN 08088) which is designed to bond foam backed upholstery type fabrics to almost anything (wood, plastic, metal etc.). It comes in a 18 oz aerosol can and will do a whole bunch of speakers and its compatible with any kind of surround material. The aerosol sprays different patterns including a lace spray pattern with controllable width. Very easy to use. Every repair I've ever done with this stuff is permanent (to date after 10+ yrs).

Used Elmers on a bunch, with no problems. Takes a little longer to set up as it isn't so gooey right out of the bottle. Started using it 'cuz the little bottle of glue I got in a pre-packaged surround repair kit looked suspiciously like Elmers...

Aileen's Tacky Glue is similar to Elmers, but more gooey and sets up quicker.

Last two pair I've done using Beacon Fabri-Tack clear adhesive. Even gooey-er than Aileen's and quickest to set up. Only downside is that it is so sticky it forms those cobweb-like strings if you touch a bit and pull away, but they are easily cleaned up.

Even have used other stuff like clear RTV/caulk...but never contact cement (I feel much better with stuff that I have time to fix any possible screwups before it all goes permanent on me).

Seems like almost anything will work. My current favorite is the Fabri-Tack stuff. All of the above can be bought at Wal-Mart, JoAnn Fabrics, etc.

If only surrounds were as plentiful...off to order more from MAT...

NS CUlater, The glue I got was Elmers I bet.

Buy a bottle of Elmers, get the surrounds from MAT and
save 25 dollars.
 
I've used white glue now for almost all of my surrounds, and I just bought some at the local Walgreens where it was on sale for like $1.50 a bottle.
