My first attempt at veneering

Hi All,

Well, after pondering it for months I decided to take the plunge. I went to Lowe's and purchased some real wood red oak veneer and recovered the cabinet for my CT-F950. I had purchased a cabinet on ebay probably 6 months ago and it was a little rough so it ended up in the basement until this past weekend.

Anyway, after the kids went to bed Saturday night I decided that it was now or never. I finished the veneering about 3 hours later around 12:30am and went to bed. It was a little stressful and I was meantally tired by that time. Sunday morning I sanded the edges and gave it a first coat of polyurethane. It sat the rest of the day until the kids were back in bed Sunday night.. I then sanded it with 220 grit paper and gave it a second coat of urethane. When I came home from work today I had to put the 950 in it so I could share photos with everyone before it got too late. It's not perfect but I'm quite happy with the results. I'm now debating if I should do my SA-6800 Integrated Amp and TX-6800 Tuner in the same finish. I would love to hear your thoughts on this.

That looks great.....awesome work! I kind of like the "blond" look. It makes it look "sophisticated" and highlights the beauty of the aluminum.
 
Yes, I like the way the light colour looks with the silver face. I'll have to keep that one in mind for my next project.
 
What did you use for glue? And what's this "iron" business I keep reading about?

That's a beauty. No way my first effort will turn out that good. Got a pair of small Advents I'm thinking about doing for a test. Man, seriously, that looks out of this world!

It actually sounds better now too. Didn't think that was possible. :D

It is Band-It brand iron-on veneer. Yes, you set your clothing iron to cotton and put a piece of craft paper or tin foil between the iron and the veneer and it melts the glue backing to adhere to the surface. Very Slick. I'm curious myself to see how it holds up. It's supposed to be furniture grade I believe.

I haven't seen any comments about doing the integrated amp and tuner to match. What do you guys think?

No kidding! Wow, that's about my speed! So you iron it on and then trim with like a router with a flush bit? I think I could do that!

I purchased the Band-It edge trimmer but had to finish the edges with 220 sandpaper.

It was actually fun now that I look back at it. I look forward to my next project. My wife mentioned that a lot of things could be resurfaced with that stuff so I suspect she may find stuff for me to do also.

Gee, I wonder how the HPM-100's would look in oak?

Looks very very nice. I'm going to try the waterproof yellow (wood) glue + hot iron method on some AR7s with teak.
I've only been saying that for a year.

I agree, the veneer (is it oak?) drops years off the piece. Very modern look.

And, an amazing job for your first time! Do you intend to do the rest of your system in the same finish?
