Rodgers LS4A

rogers are essentially Kef.
if you look at the woofer frame you'll see it's a B200 driver with a clear cone (weird!). Also, that looks like a later T27 tweeter. Very not bad.
They do speech really well since rogers basically designed speakers for monitoring spoken word.

not as good as a 35a but still very cool.

The Rogers 205 mm driver has a basket which superficially looks like the KEF B200. However this driver was developed from a Chartwell driver that used a clear or milky colored polypropylene cone in the late 70's. When Chartwell was bought by Rogers in the early 80's, the driver tooling and the rights to use polypropylene as a cone material passed over to Rogers. Rogers developed a number of PP based drivers and made mostly their own bass-mids after the early 80's. The only Rogers speaker that actually used KEF Drivers were the famous LS3/5a's (KEF B110 andT27), and the Compact and Export Monitors. The Studio 1 had a Bextrene bass mid of their own manufacture.

The tweeter is a 19mm aluminum dome unit (which KEF did not produce) of either SEAS or SCAN-SPEAK manufacture. The hard plastic version of this tweeter was quite popular with British manufacturers.

These LS2,4, 6a were middle priced, mid to late 80's and utilized MDF critically damped enclosures. These are similar in concept to the BBC birch ply damped cabinets but less expensive to build. The baffle is glued in these speakers. The "screws" you see in the corners are actually dowel pins/grille pins to hold the grille on, similar to JBL L100 types.

Most all Rogers speakers are voiced in the classic British monitor tradition of smooth, natural midrange and reasonably extended bass and treble. They are moderately efficient.

As many other posters have said, at the price the speakers alone are a good buy. The Linn Kan stands are at least $65-100 for the pair so that's even better. Get that check into the mail and let us know how they sound.

Well, I picked up the Rodgers today. Got them playing now.
I'll try to give some semblance of a review here but I'm not too good at this:


I should say that I have been listening to a pair of Pioneer CS-88A's for the last few months.

The first thing I noticed was the bass, bass I can almost feel. The mids and highs are crystal clear just the way I like them.

They seem intergrated well and I like the way they image, something I missed with the Pioneers and haven't had since I got rid of my Polks.

They kind of remind me of my EPI 100's as far as the clarity, but there is so much more bass with the Rodgers.

And an added plus is the looks, they look good on the Linn stands (anybody know if these stands can be filled) AND my wife likes them... yeah she likes them!

Now, I need some opinions here... does anybody know of a good match, amp/receiver wise, with these speakers.
Here's what I have to work with:
Kenwood KA9100
Sansui 2000x
Sherwood S-7200
HK 430
Onkyo TX-2500
Pioneer SX535

Right now I'm using a NAD 7130 I just got on Friday for $10. I kind of like this combination.

A very old thread I know, but I'd like to know after these years are the Rogers LS4a still good? Have your feeling toward them remains or changed? There's a pair near my place so your input might help. Thanks.

I don’t have the Rodgers anymore. Got rid of them many years ago. Not because I didn’t like them but just to move on and try different speakers.
I say if you have an chance to get a pair, get them. Don’t expect a “west coast” sound but an “east coast sound, smooth, integrated, easy to listen to. Good luck.

Junk don't waste your time unless they're dirt cheap and you aren't critical about sound quality. They have nothing in common with the BBC monitors like this zombie thread would make you believe.

Thank you so much, didn't really expect a reply from such an old thread

A very very old thread about some old speakers but if anyone is interested I have just recently purchased a nice pair of LS4a's and am pleasantly surprised.

I have purchased a few other old speakers in the past and have sold them on as they were OK, perfectly good but average.

As some say, the LS4a's have the BBC monitor style mid range which has a transparency I find easier to listen to than some speakers far in excess of their price (£100 on ebay).

Coupled with a nice smart traditional look, nicely extended top end and bottom that won't go astray.

These Rogers will be keepers for me.

I never understand why some people get bothered by responses to old threads. The information provided stays relevant, so why start a new thread and spread information thin?

I just picked up a pair of LS4a/2 and like what I hear thus far when hooked up to an early 80s Toshiba receiver. Almost criminal, I know. Have an NAD 7020 on the way this week and looking forward to hearing this combination. It’s a challenge using stands in the room where these will be used, so any advice on setup when using furniture for the speakers to rest on?
