Figured out the rattle in my AR3a's

I pulled the 12" Driver thinking the worst and I found it was just the surround had come off the rim just a little. I used some glue that came with a refoam kit and applied it underneath with a playing card. Think that will do the job?

As far as my opinion on my new AR3a's... WOW. I can't believe how much I like them. I really like that midbass kick you get from them. A really really nice speaker that I didn't expect to actually keep. Now I just need to refoam the 4411's and do the Pepsi taste test challenge. Right now I'm leaning on the AR's just cus I love that sealed enclosure sound. And boy they can gobble up some big watts-- they took a full onslaught from my SX-1250 with no problem. Guess I'll have to try the MC2300 next :scratch2:

If the surround isn't torn or damaged, and has just come unglued in that spot, your repair should be adequate.

You will find out soon, one way or another...
 
Ya it just came unglued a little. I checked the spider and it wasn't damaged. The surrounds are cloth and still intact. I'm just happy as hell that there wasn't any "real" damage. Hopefully the glue works out :D
 
Try some gel "super glue". It has a longer working time and I've found it works well for speaker repair.

Pull the driver, and hold it up to the light. If there are any holes open in the surround cloth where the old sealant has dried up, you have air leaks! Seal the surround (you can search the forum, there are several methods), and that "mid-bass thump" should turn into smooth, deep response. :yes:
 
hehe, no the cloth surrounds were absolutely intact. I just love the midbass thump. My JBL's already have that deep response but the AR's have both the deep smooth + the nice mid-bass thump, which is why I love them so much. The JBL's to my experience kinda lack that.

On a side note:
It's weird but I've only judged things by what I hear. I haven't heard everything on the planet, obviously-- probably a 1/10th of a percent as alot of the guys on this forum. I've always been a JBL fanatic until I heard these AR's that I picked up this weekend-- I'm sold on AR's (until otherwise). The AR's just seem more "full", the bass alot more alive, especially in reference to something like a kickdrum. The highs sound less fatiguing to me. I guess it's almost more authentic to me. But as I said I can only judge on what I hear not by what others say.
 
The Ars will go deeper than the JBL. I was looking at that pair myself glad someone bought them who appreciates them. I also have a pair along with a pair of 9s, 11s, 10 pi, and 98ls. All have the 12 inch ar woofers. love that clean bass and smooth well dispersed full range sound.

Welcome to the club. :music: Once I "discovered" the differences in the AR sound, I started collecting in earnest; I now have several versions of the 2 series, a few 4x, 7, a small modern pair or two and my favs of the bunch - AR-5.

Step 2: Find some big Yamaha power. Nice combo. :D
