baffle I'm removing is 1" material, gads.....Waveguides in hand, drawing up

Gottcha. My mistake, I knew it was a wave guide/horn, and mistakenly thought it was the 12x6 Jbl we've been using, those things sure have gone into a lot of different speakers in these theads! At least I remembered it was an AR.

That's what ur working on. I thought the lower was only a plinth. How much box volume do you pick up? Looks awesome. I initially thought the woofer cutout was for a 15"

I get an additional ~1 cuft real volume from the plinth, raising the total volume to ~2.5 cuft. That's bigger than BB6P's suggested optimum 2.0 cuft "High fidelity" volume for LE14A. "Extended bass" alignment is somewhat larger still.
S99 was clearly too small to make decent bass by contemporary standards with LE14A, which can certainly do it. The original tweeter hardly even qualifies as one, and required crossing in way too high for this woofer.
My cutout in the bottom of the S99 cabinet seems to be too small to integrate the volumes well. It's behaving like dual-tuned chambers right now, overdamped, and varying the port length is not producing the predicted results. I want to tune to 32 Hz to punch up the bass there, and even with short 4" ducts, it's at 26 Hz. I'm gonna have to apply power tools again.

In any case, it's sounding very good in the present state. 40 Hz is powerful, and 30 Hz is certainly present.

That is a very nice way to gain some additional volume. The LE14's are absolutely great speakers whether used in EconoWaves or something else. Love that driver. :yes:
The 900 Hz that was used for the Santana cabinets should work for the extended S99's, shouldn't it? I am interested to see what sort of low pass frequency you come up with for the LE14A.
How big a cutout did you make in the bottom of the S99 cabinets, and how do you seal the cabinets to the base?

I'm about to jump on this project but have no LF driver available excepting a pair of Altec 421-8LF's. Took a look in Parts Express and noticed this Pioneer driver - http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?&Partnumber=290-125
Could someone take a quick look and see if this item would be suitable?

I'm not liking the first one's spec stopping at 1.5 kHz. Your woofer will have to play nice up there.
The second one is at least spec'd higher, though the FR curves don't show us what's happening above 1 kHz:

It's maybe 6" square, so 36 sqin, and needs to be at least twice that, my guess.
The seal is just foam gasket tape right now; the cabinet weight is enough to make a good seal. I checked with the stethoscope at 30 Hz.
Ultimately, there's a 1/2" spacer goes in there, creating a reveal all around. Aesthetically, if I can't make it look like all one cabinet, I instead emphasize that they are separate. I've already fooled Skywave, apparently, heh, heh.
I don't know what color it's going to be yet, but I clearly cannot match the color and grain of the vintage walnut cab up top.

Glad to see your giving econowave a spin, are your drivers mounted in boxes already, or are you going to DIY a set? Zilch, nice Texas sawsall massacre!

I haven't "massacered" my 4647s yet, ( by this I mean installing the horn in the face plate, not the "towerizing" massacre" ) but have every intention of doing do eventually.
I need to practice on some scrap wood before attacking them. They were hung up from the ceiling, so they have holes drilled in them from mounting and so forth. Hope to veneer them after the massacre.In the mean time, they play ( econowaves ) just fine sitting on top. You'll enjoy this project.:yes:
I need to get a sawsall! I think another advantage to the conversion Zilch did was to raise the height a little. Mine seem a little short compared to the A7s.

Harbor Freight was to deliver 4 coasters/dollies on the 21st, but they arent here yet!
I guess I'll tool down to lowe's for some 2x4 s.:thmbsp:

PS Just got delivered, after screwing on all the castors, both the A7s as well as the 4647 econowaves are now on rollers, and a little bit taller as well.

I rugged my dumpster boxes. NOT a pro job. However, my lungs and apartment are very evenly coated with 3M's SUPER 77 spray adhesive. Besides the hacking, wherever I walk, my feet pick up bits of everything.
The dollies look good, a must have; got to get some.
