Help me understand something. I have been assuming that the Ewave horn will sound better than my EV 8hd exponential (SP) horn.....maybe less honky. Is that right? I just ordered 16 horns from Pyle yesterday and they should get here tomorrow. We at the SMAC did a mass buy. Cheers.

I earlier cautioned that the E'Wave waveguide will likely not reach as low as the EV horn, but that its other attributes such as constant directivity may net out to it sounding better.
Most true exponentials are beamy and honky, yes.... :yes:
Thanks Zilch. I do understand about the EW not going down that low, but I figure it is worth a try. So is the EW a conical or tractrix? I through these words around like I know what I am talking about....but I don't. If the EW sounds better, I can change my crossovers to cross at a higher freq. Cheers.

First, you need an artwork. Circuit layout is something that was learned years ago. For home use, I just use the artwork itself, saving a photography charge. Next is an exposure holder. I use an old textbook and a sheet of seeded glass. The air bubbles in the seeded glass don't affect the exposure. Plain glass would be better, but I am too cheap to spring for a new piece. A light source is also needed. Mine is the sun. Can't do this on really cloudy days, but we don't get many of those in Arizona. Then you need a developing tank. Mine is an old pyrex pan that was stolen from mama's kitchen years ago. Next is an etching tank. Again, the pyrex pan does the job. Holes can be drilled with a hand drill, but a small bench top drill press makes it easier.
Supplies such as presensitized pc boards and developer can be purchased in many places, including Parts Express. Etching solution is bought from Capitol Electronics Supply in Phoenix, although it is available lots of places.
If we can make it possible for everyone to etch their own boards via the two crossover layouts in the Econo threads here, I will put up a simple tutorial. It is easy, once you get the hang of it, and fun.

I'm all ears (and eyes ) this will be a fantastic way for members to keep learning from this thread. I know its getting large, and seems to not stop growing! However, despite a few moaning about having to plod through it to get some particular nugget, it is a good read and highly educational. Between it and the insignia collaborative thread, I dont know if I've seen threads anywhere offering this degree of information, complete with development info to finished project, not to mention explainations as to what is going on.
The circuit board tutorial would be an excellent addition to this already fine thread. I as well as many others would appreciate being able to make our crossovers look half as professional as yours do!

I have lately been working on a ST-70 Dynaco with Welbourne mod and have it now running hum free. Hooked it up to the Econowaves for a try and couldnt be more pleased! I knew this amp would rock the A7s, but was unsure about this combination, the JBL 2225H can really suck up some power.
No problem, even at uncomfortable volume levels, even the bass was surprisingly strong all things considered. Just a note for those of you contemplating Econowave with not so powerful amps like this:thmbsp:

What waveguide is it? I just found an old pair ( my first diy speaker btw ) of oak veneered cabs, about 3/4 cu ft, ported with a pair of old Precision 6.5 inch poly woofers in them. That waveguide looks like it would go right in?

There are new inexpensive JBL 1" thread-on PT waveguides available suitable for use in smaller designs, an 8" square one with 90° x 50° dispersion and a 6" square one with 90° x 90°. They will likely require different HF compensation, and we don't yet know how low they will play, i.e., we need more opportunity to work with them.... :yes:

It is interesting to know how Hsu can price their speakers that low, I think their margin is not very high besides they have an advantage of being able to sell their product direct.
With the speaker market flooded with cheap imports they probably have no choice but to match the market prices. In the end the consumers gain, as I can see the speakers would be suitable for use as computer speakers as well, at the same time Hsu hopes to sell the associated subwoofer as well which may come as a package.
The speakers should sound reasonable good much better than so many computer speakers out there.

She tried that on me about 10 yr.ago re: a cat/kitten, I didn't believe her either.
Yesterday a work-mate said he was going to can a pair of Optimus 3way speakers, I piped up and asked " why? ", long and short of it is they are now in my shop awaiting my attention, they are rough, they appear to by vinyl covered particle board, the drivers received his ex's tender loving attention ( she literally kicked the ever lovin' @#$% out of em' ).
Two questions:
How should I go about damping the cabinets? They sound " hollow " when rapped with a knuckle, any advice on removing the vinyl? ( I'm thinking heat gun ). I can veneer them later.
suggestions for a decently efficient 12" driver, that won't break the bank? would seem a shame to put an 88Db woofer under the "Econowave".

I plan to construct a new baffle, and I haven't measured them yet to see what the cubic volume is, of course it's possible to put any size driver in them with the new baffle, along with any size port too...Regardless, it still saves me the time, and expense of completely constructing new cabinets.

I'll see how the testing of that little one goes...think I may have a project for it. I noticed another thread where a bunch of guys are doing a group buy on the Pyle version of econowaveguide. Dont know if they're getting a discount or if they are just all ordering together as they have an event to go to and its just handy?
We'd probably need more than 2 to get any advantage, and I dont know if JBL pro would offer any discount. These horns are awfully inexpensive, may not be worth a group buy? We'll see how it goes. If all those guys build econowave, ( which I suppose they are or wouldnt be buying the waveguides)
This project is going to take another large popularity jump. Its really come into its own this thread!:yes:
We midwesterners have a get together being planned for Oct., and I am trying to find a handy way to introduce everyone there to econowave. If I can use the wifes FJ Cruiser I could bring the entire pair, 4647s and all. Otherwise, I'll bring the "top" and see if there's something to put it on. will discuss this with Jaymana later.
Things like this will expose more members to Econowave. It brings on instant converts, as such I see this thread and project not only continueing for some time, but becoming one of the best speaker related threads on the net.:thmbsp:
